Yuma – 2024

December 9. 2023 – Saturday
Time to head south to Yuma once again! After having a wonderful Hanukkah celebration with the kids/grandkids yesterday, we were loaded up and ready to leave the storage unit before 7:00 am. Washington weather was rain (on and off) but not a lot of traffic. By the time we got to Oregon it was dry but cloudy, and still not much traffic. We stopped at a rest stop for a quick sandwich lunch, and then stopped at Seven Feathers to gas up ($3.78 per gallon). It was only 2:30, the weather and traffic were very good, and we were caffeinated – so we decided to continue on to Rolling Hills in Northern California. Since we didn’t arrive until after 7:00pm we did a little night driving which actually went well. There was a little bit of snow on the ground at the Siskiyou Summit but that was it. Our dinner was leftover chili from the night before. By 8:30 we were snug in bed. Although it was in the 40’s we were very comfortable, as compared to some year’s when it’s been teeth-chattering cold.

December 10, 2023 – Sunday
After hot beverages we were on the move again about 5:45 am. We were treated to a beautiful, expansive sunrise, followed by some areas of fog before the sun came out for a mostly hazy sunny day. We stopped at a rest area for lunch and also stopped for gas after Los Angeles ($5.52 per gallon!!!!) It was smooth driving all day and we arrived at the Fantasy Springs Casino free RV lot (in Indio) about 5:20. After talking to Mom and Dad, we had dinner (chili and a sandwich), did some reading, and went to bed at a little after 8:00. Another long, 12 hour-ish day but we were now within about 3 hours of Sun Vista.

NOTE: A full tank of gas from Seven Feather will not make it to Indio. We got about 40 gallons outside of Los Angeles to get us to Yuma where gas was much cheaper.

December 11, 2023 – Monday
We both slept well, had our hot beverages, and were on our way again by 7:00. Another day of hazy sun. On our drive to Sun Vista, we stopped once again for gas when we got into Yuma, filling up the tank at $4.68 per gallon. Our site was open so by about 12:30 AZ time we were parked in our home-away-from home for the next 3 months. Most the afternoon was spent setting up, cleaning, settling in, and enjoying hot showers after 2 ½ days on the road. We ate a frozen one-pan pasta meal from Trader Joe’s, relaxed a bit, then turned in early.

NOTE: About 45 minutes outside of Indio there is an easy to get into large gravel lot in between a Family Dollar Store and a Chevron with several small stores. Good place to stop to wait after leaving Fantasy Springs for RV to have a chance to warm up inside. There were also areas to park near Imperial Dunes as well as a good-sized rest area by the dunes.

December 12, 2023 – Tuesday
We officially registered at the office and got our mailbox key. We both kept busy all day inside the RV before catching some wonderful sun late afternoon. Another TJ’s frozen dinner, watching TV, and early bedtime.

December 13-15, 2023
Enjoyed the warm, sunny weather. We rode our bikes around the park, spent time on the patio, and washed the car and bikes.

December 16, 2023 – Saturday
Just after 8:00 we hit the road for the long drive to Tucson to pick up Daniel and Nicole at the airport just before 1:00. It was wonderful to see and hug them both. We had arrived a little early so we ate lunch in the cell phone lot before their plane landed, then the two of them ate lunch on the drive back to Yuma. They settled in and then Laurie grilled a delicious salmon dinner. After dinner we started the series “Stranger Things” which seems pretty good so far. Daniel and Nicole adjusted to our early bedtime schedule. They’ll still have a week’s vacation back at home to do their own thing before work starts again.

December 17, 2023 – Sunday
We adjusted a bit to Daniel and Nicole’s sleep schedule by reading, watching TV, and sipping coffee in our room until about 8:00. A mostly sunny, warm (mid-70’s) day. We all went on a walk around the park to show Daniel around since it was his first time at Sun Vista. After touring all the facilities around the clubhouse, we went to the Fun Park where we had a rousing game of miniature golf. (Some of us didn’t know our own strength as balls ended up by the golf practice cages and on the bocce ball green!) It was fun with Laurie being the top performer. We relaxed at the RV, inside and out, until dinner. The day ended with more episodes of Stranger Things with an ice cream break.

December 18-21, 2023 – Monday-Thursday
The weather has been warm and partly sunny these past few days. During the mornings we each do our own thing until about noon. Some of our fun afternoons included shuffleboard, swimming and relaxing by the outdoor pool, and several hours shooting pool in the pool room. Pat cooked some dinners, Laurie grilled some dinners (with Daniel’s help), and Nicole made some delicious sugar cookie bars. We picked up some date shakes from Martha’s Garden one afternoon which we put in the freezer until the evening. They were yummy. We went to Lin’s Grand Buffet for some delicious Chinese food on Thursday which was followed by a long walk around the park once our food settled. All days ended with watching some more Stranger Things.

December 22, 2023 – Friday
Rain started overnight and continued throughout the day, getting heavy and windy at times. It sounded wonderful on the RV’s roof! There was even some thunder and lightning here and there! There were flash flood warnings in the area in the afternoon. We stayed cozy inside with Laurie and Daniel playing computer games together, and Pat and Nicole doing their own thing on their computers. In the evening we finished up Season 2 of Stranger Things which is where we’ll have to end watching with the kids. Nicole’s seen the next 2 seasons already, and Laurie will try to get those seasons so the rest of us can catch up to her.

December 23, 2023 – Saturday
Back to pleasant, sunny weather. Nicole and Laurie went for a bike ride in and out of the park. We spent some time relaxing on the patio enjoying the sunshine. Nicole made her tortellini casserole for dinner which we all loved. Once our yummy dinner had a chance to digest we headed out in the cool evening to go swimming. For most the time we had the indoor pool to ourselves. Laurie swam some laps and all of us had fun hitting a beach ball back and forth. We finished off with a soak in the hot tub and then showers. Surprisingly we didn’t feel very cold walking back to the RV in the dark. After all that exercise we needed something refreshing – Laurie’s delicious milkshakes! A good ending for a good day.

December 24, 2023 – Sunday
Weather was a repeat of yesterday. We all relaxed in the RV in the morning, then spent the afternoon shooting pool which was a lot of fun. Laurie grilled some amazing hamburgers which we had with oven fries. After dinner Daniel and Nicole headed out on the bikes in search of Pokémon and to take in the beautiful setting sun. We watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which was entertaining, and included a break for milkshakes and Nicole’s sugar cookie bars. It was the last full day for Daniel and Nicole’s visit.

December 25, 2023 – Monday
Another beautiful weather day for our drive to Tucson to drop Daniel and Nicole at the airport. ☹ They packed in the morning, we spent some time chatting, and then Nicole led us on a last walk around the park until it was time to leave about noon. Close to the airport we stopped for a picnic lunch at a park we had scouted out ahead of time – Christopher Columbus Park. After all the dryness and dust of the desert, it was amazing to come across a small lake just 1.5 miles off the highway. There were numerous birds of various kinds floating on the lake and congregating in areas on the shore. Fishing and boating were allowed, and there was a path that seemed to follow the shore but we couldn’t see all the way around the lake. The park had lots of solar panel-covered parking areas and rotundas for sheltered gatherings. There were bathrooms but they were locked. There also was a large dog park away from the lake that had several happy customers. After eating and stretching our legs it was only about a 20-minute drive to the airport. There were hardly any cars, and the kids said there were hardly any people inside. Their flight ended up taking off about 20 minutes early and then landed them back home safe-and-sound early as well. The time they were here seemed to go fast but we all had a lot of fun, did a variety of activities, enjoyed each other’s company, and ate some yummy food – including lots of ice cream! Hope they visit again in the future!

December 26-31, 2023
Nothing too exciting to finish out the year. We were able to relax in the sun on the patio a couple times but it’s been a bit cooler (low 60’s) with more clouds than sun. Mostly we were catching up on stuff inside the RV but did ride our bikes a couple times. In the evening we’re been watching more episodes of Stranger Things, Seasons 3 and 4. We’ll see what the new year holds . . .

January 1, 2024 – March 8, 2024
Many days early on in our stay were a bit cooler and less sunny than we would have liked but we still spent a good amount of time relaxing on the patio chatting, snoozing, reading, enjoying happy hour, etc. Towards the beginning of March the temperature started warming up bit by bit, finally getting into the 80’s before our departure. Daniel got us started on pool when he was here and we visited the pool room quite a few times. Other activities were mini golf, bike riding, and shuffleboard. We spent time on our computers doing future trip planning, playing games, shopping, meal planning, and just poking around. Evenings we spent watching the complete series of “Six Feet Under” which was very good. Following that series we started with “Eureka” which we also enjoyed and managed to finish 4 of 5 seasons. We also watched the movie “Flowers of the Killer Moon” which was very interesting. We made another visit to Lin’s Chinese Buffet which was wonderful, but the other nights we cooked or grilled.  We ate our way through most everything we could in the freezer, fridge, and pantry so there’d be less to take back home. (Of course, we’re bringing back some Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream which is not sold back home.) Many evenings we had an ice cream break in between episodes. We also had Pasteis de Nata (Portuguese custard tarts) which we had bought at Costco. (A taste of our upcoming fall trip to Portugal!)

March 9, 2024
We stayed in Yuma an extra few days so that we could attend the airshow at the Marine base in Yuma. The base is only about 15 minutes away from Sun Vista . We had no problem with the on-base parking and catching the free shuttle to the flightline. They searched the items that we were taking in, and also scanned us before we were allowed on the shuttle. We had a little time before the show began, so we placed Pat’s chair in a good spot, then wandered around exploring about 2 dozen displays of various aircraft. There were a lot of booths selling food, as well as military-themed merchandise. Then we found a better place to observe the airshow, so we relocated the chair. We were in the free area rather than the extra-cost seating areas. Mainly this meant we didn’t have a great view of things that happened on the ground (such as swearing in new recruits), most of which wasn’t very interesting anyhow. The activities that happened in the air were amazing, though! The show started with a skydiving demo then proceeded on to a variety of aircraft performances. The high-speed, high-flying jets were spectacular. They flew straight up, spun around, flew straight down, hovered in place, flew backwards, and generally seemed to defy physics. The day was sunny, and about 75 degrees with a breeze – very pleasant for spending about 4 hours outside. It took about 35 minutes to get on the shuttle back to the parking lot but their system was very efficient considering the size of the crowd. There were no issues leaving the parking lot and before we knew it were relaxing on the patio before dinner and watching some more episodes of Eureka in the evening.. A wonderful day!

March 10-12. 2024
Time to prepare for our journey home. Laurie planned our route and we have our fingers crossed that the weather will cooperate the whole drive home. There was cleaning to do inside and out, as well as packing to do.

March 13, 2024
Time to start our trip home. After final packing and disconnecting, we pulled out of our site about 9:00 on a beautiful, sunny day. The day was uneventful with a few pockets of heavy traffic but nothing that lasted too long. It was mostly sunny getting to 80 degrees in some areas. Our stop for the night was the rest area at Tejon Pass, elevation about 4,200, in Lebec, CA. Because of the high elevation it was cooler – the mid-50’s when we arrived just before 4:00. We had some leftover spaghetti from last night, relaxed, read, watched a gorgeous sunset, and turned in early at about 8:15.

March 14, 2024
We were up before sunrise, made coffee, got the RV ready, and hit the road just after 6:30 when the sun was just starting to give the eastern horizon a golden glow. The morning temperature was 43! It was sunny and very windy the entire day with the temperature getting into the 70’s by the afternoon. With a stop for gas as well as a quick lunch break, we arrived at the Rolling Hills Casino Truck Stop at 2:45. We went to the casino to checkout renovations that had been made since our last visit and get some free soda/lemonade, then settled in for the evening. Dinner tonight was a salad and leftover grilled sausages that we had in the freezer. We turned in early again.

March 15, 2024
Same start as yesterday with a few streaks of clouds around. Today’s drive was more scenic with rolling hills, snow-capped mountains, and rivers winding through valleys everywhere. By late morning we were at Seven Feathers where we filled up with diesel and propane, then parked in the truckers’ lot to eat lunch. Although this was our original stopping point for the night, we decided to push on since it was so early and the weather was perfect. French Prairie Rest Stop in Northern Oregon was our parking spot for the night. It’s a huge rest area with lots of trees and grass. There were 3 rows of parking available but only the bathrooms on the first row closest to the highway were open – which was okay since we had our own! It was 72 degrees when we parked at about 4:00. Dinner was a Trader Joe’s frozen bag meal of Linguine and Tomatoes with Pesto Sauce along with bread sticks. Another early bedtime.

March 16, 2024
It looked like more vehicles had come in overnight but it had been a quiet night. Surprisingly, it was warmer overnight and in the morning here, than it had been at our stops farther south. Our usual morning and we were on our way by 6:45. The sun was farther up just as we drove through Portland and lit up all the tall, glass buildings which was a beautiful sight. Then it was the usual drive through Washington on a mostly sunny, near 70-degree day. It was only about a 4-1/2 hour drive home today, with a chunk of that sitting in Seattle traffic. We packed the car with all our stuff from the RV, put it in its storage unit, and headed home. It was great to see Daniel! And as we were greeted by him, Nicole pulled up. (She watched the RV camera feed and when she saw the door go down on the storage unit, she jumped in her car and hurried over.) Hugs all around! They both helped with unloading the car and unpacking everything in the house. Daniel did a wonderful job taking care of the house and all the odds and ends it entailed. We got almost everything put away and had a chance to visit before Nicole had to head home for a D&D event she was hosting online. We’re very happy to be back home!

Yuma – 2023

December 4, 2022 – Sunday
It’s snowy, icy, and cold in Mukilteo – time to head south to Yuma! Just the two of us are making the trek down this year as Mom and Dad are traveling to Hawaii to begin a new adventure of living in Hawaii, at least trying it for a year. We were out of the house before 7:00, giving our good-bye hugs to Daniel and Nicole who woke up early to see us off. Nicole will come visit us on Dec 17 for 1 ½ weeks while Daniel will look after the house and cats. It was a cold morning with the car windows requiring scraping. The RV storage unit pavement was very icy so we carefully loaded up the RV, hooked up the tow car, and were on our way by about 8:00. Once we were out of the storage place and on the main roads, conditions were fine. During our drive we encountered a variety of weather including rain, snow, fog, and sunshine. Even though it was snowing heavily in northern Oregon, the ground was warm so nothing was accumulating. We stopped at the French Prairie Rest Area around noon for a quick lunch then it was back on the road. After getting gas at the Seven Feathers Truck Stop, we stopped at the RV park to see how much staying there would be but their best deal was $39. This was too high for us so we drove over to the free boondocking area by the casino. We settled in then walked over to the casino to look around and get some free soft drinks. Dinner tonight was a frozen Chicken Alfredo & Pasta meal that we just had to heat up in a frying pan. The early evening was spent with Laurie relaxing after driving all day, and Pat reading. We turned in about 8:30. It was comfortable under the covers despite not having any heat (our HydroHot diesel was not firing up) and we both slept well.

December 5, 2022 – Monday
A very cold start to the day but at least it’s not freezing, although it was a bit foggy. We warmed ourselves with coffee and by 7:30 were hitting the road again. Today also had a variety of rain, fog, and sun but the roads were fine until we got into California north of Mt. Shasta where chains were required in order to proceed because of snow/ice further ahead on the highway. Trucks and cars were only being let through if they had chains or 4-wheel drive. We pulled to the side of the highway along with many other trucks to wait until the road was open without needing chains, which took about 2 hours. We relaxed, ate some lunch, and were entertained watching truckers put on their chains while we waited. When we finally drove the route it was just wet pavement but there was some fog and rain which made it a bit messy. Our stop for the night was Colusa Casino in Colusa, CA, about a 15 minute drive from I5, where we arrived about 3:30. They have a big gravel lot where RVs can boondock for free. Of course we had to go check out the casino, with masks! New Players Club Members each get $25 in free slot play. After we played through the $50 we ended up with a profit just shy of $70! Even though we felt like big winners, we grabbed some free sodas and went back to the RV for a cheap grilled cheese and tomato soup dinner. (Got to save money towards future cruises!) Then we talked to M&D, relaxed, and went to bed.

December 6, 2022 – Tuesday
Another cold start warmed by coffee before heading out, getting gas at the casino gas station first. The day’s weather was much improved warming up some and turning from mostly cloudy to mostly sunny. We stopped at a rest area for a quick lunch. Travel was going so well we decided that instead of overnighting in the Bakersfield area we’d aim for Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio so we’d have a short driving day on Wednesday to get to Sun Vista. When we made the decision with the current traffic situation the GPS said we’d arrive about 5:45. We thought this would give us plenty of time to go to Costco in Indio and pick up dinner at the food court before it closed at 8:30. Unfortunately, we were overly optimistic about California traffic. We ended up spending hours in stop and go traffic arriving at Fantasy Springs about 7:15. At least we had Nicole’s D&D Podcast to listen to during the drive. After parking in the casino’s free boondocking gravel lot, Laurie was still willing to go to Costco but Pat not so much. We thought we might go when Costco opened the next day at 10:00am before our drive. Our quick dinner was toast with melted cheese, eggs and bacon on it.

December 7, 2022 – Wednesday
After a good night’s sleep, we decided to depart early and go to the Costco in El Centro, about 90 minutes away, which was on our way to Yuma. (This would save us a 2 hour round trip drive from Yuma to the El Centro Costco a few days after getting to Sun Vista.) In El Centro we were able to park across the street in a large shopping center parking lot and walk across to Costco. We took grocery bags with and had no problem walking back with our stuff. We arrived at Sun Vista about 1:30, which is an hour ahead of CA/WA. The rest of the day was spent setting up and settling in. We spoke with Mom and Dad to update each other, as well as Cathi Stark regarding upcoming Indio rally stuff. Dinner was a Costco meal of Coconut Chicken which we had over rice with stir-fry vegetables. Although the days get up to nearly 70 degrees, the nights in Yuma are in the lower 40’s so it was very nice to have full hook-ups again and be able to use our electric blankets (and take showers)!

December 8, 2022 – Thursday
We had a productive morning doing odds-and-ends, putting together a Walmart order for tomorrow morning, going to the office to sign in and let them know our rally travel departure and return dates, and picking up our mailbox key. We spent the afternoon washing the RV, car, and bikes which were all filthy from our travels. It was a lot of work but it was a pleasant, sunny day near 70 degrees. After that busy afternoon we revived with showers and leftovers for dinner. We spent the evening just relaxing.

December 9, 2022 – Friday
We did our first Walmart pickup and plan to get back into doing pickups on Friday mornings. Yesterday we spent most of the day outside, but today we spent most of it inside doing a variety of projects, computer stuff, laundry, and phone calls with family. Dinner was chili which we had brought from home.

December 10, 2022 – Saturday
Again we spent our morning doing odds-and-ends such as looking at flights for our spring cruise, investigating Medicare further, and planning future meals. It was another beautiful 70 degree sunny day so we spent some time relaxing on the patio ending with Happy Hour. We sure miss having M&D’s company and conversation. After having chili leftovers for dinner, we started watching the series “Narcos” which chronicles the cocaine trade in Columbia and real-life stories of drug kingpins in the late 80’s. The first two episodes were very interesting so we’ll continue the series which has 3 seasons for a total of 28 episodes.

Our lives will become pretty routine with lots of relaxing, biking riding, shuffleboard, etc. so we won’t be posting entries for awhile. We do have Nicole’s visit in a week and rallies in January to look forward to breakup our routine.

December 17-28, 2022 -Nicole’s Visit

December 17 – Saturday
Nicole’s arrival! 😊 We made the approximate 6 hour round-trip drive to Phoenix to pick her up at the airport just before noon. She had an uneventful trip as did we. It was wonderful to give her hugs and get her settled in the RV for the next week and a half. Our days will be pretty routine so some of our blogging may be brief. Maybe a few sentences if we do something interesting.

December 18 – Sunday
In the evening we watched “Where the Crawdads Sing” which we all enjoyed, especially with an ice cream break.

December 19 – Monday
Today it was only in the low 60’s and breezy but sunny in the afternoon so we ventured over to the pool. A group was playing volleyball in the indoor pool so we went swimming in the outdoor pool which is heated. The couple of people who were there soon left so we had the pool to ourselves. We spent a little time relaxing in the huge hot tub (36 person limit!) which we also had to ourselves. After using the showers in the locker rooms we returned to our cozy RV.

December 21 – Wednesday
It was a little bit warmer and sunny today. Once it warmed up around noon we went hiking along the Colorado River in the East Wetlands Park, a wetlands restorations area of nearly 400 acres, criss-crossed with trails for walkers, bikers, and even horses. Some areas had interpretive signs explaining the terrain and animal life. It was a relaxing hike that allowed us to stretch our legs more than the walks we are taking within the RV park. Laurie grilled some yummy burgers that went well with oven fries. Nicole is keeping an eye on the Pokémon within the park and after dinner she and Laurie hopped on the bikes to go check them out. Nicole had D&D in the evening which the internet cooperated for.

December 23 – Friday
After doing an early grocery pickup at Walmart, we spent the morning relaxing in the RV. By early afternoon when it had warmed into the mid-70’s with a nice breeze, Nicole decided it was time to play some miniature golf at the Fun Park. We had fun playing through the 9 holes twice. There were some horseshoes by the horseshoe pits so we tried throwing a few. Nicole and Pat didn’t did so well with the heavy horseshoes, but the one that Laurie threw was a ringer (wrapped around the post)! Laurie and Nicole followed that with 4 rounds of bocce ball before we returned to the RV. Before settling in the two made a quick Pokémon run on the bikes. In the evening we watched “Moulin Rouge” which was as enjoyable as it was the previous times we watched it.

December 24 – Saturday
Nicole made incredible rich, outstandingly delicious brownies consisting of a fudgy layer with chocolate chips topped with a yummy cheesecake layer. Fantastic!

December 25 – Sunday
It was a beautiful day – warm and sunny. After a lazy morning we went to the outdoor pool, and we were wished a “Merry Christmas” several times walking there. There several people there including kids who must have been visiting for the holiday. Soon everyone had left the pool and we had it to ourselves. Unfortunately, the hot tub jets weren’t working but the water was still hot and felt good. After showers we sat out in the sun to dry off a bit before heading back to the RV. After dinner we watched a movie called “Nine Days” which had a unique storyline and was interesting to watch.

December 27 – Tuesday
The morning was cloudy but by afternoon the sun peaked out and it once again became breezy. Laurie and Nicole went on a bike ride outside of the park. Just south of the RV park there are some unpaved roads dotted with subdivisions to ride around. Not much to see but some good exercise. In the evening we watched “Chicago” which we all liked.

December 28 – Wednesday
Something different – a little bit of rain overnight! It sounded nice on the RV roof. It was cloudy at sunrise but mostly sunny by 9:00.

Nicole’s departure day ☹. Her flight wasn’t until 7:45 PM so we had a relaxing morning and didn’t leave for the approximate 3 hour drive to Phoenix until about 2:00 PM. We shared a picnic lunch while parked in the cell phone lot before dropping her off. We had lots of good-bye hugs and kisses. When we returned to the RV about 8:20 Nicole was already about a third of the way home on her flight which left on time and arrived in Everett at 10:19, 16 minutes later than scheduled. Daniel picked her up at Paine Field. We will miss having her company and conversation very much. Her visit went by way too fast.

December 29, 2022 – January 6, 2023
The weather has been okay, more clouds and a little cooler than we’d like, but hopefully it will improve. We spent a lot of time preparing for the Indio, CA, Beaver rally that starts on January 8th. Laurie has been organizing the security assignments and various documents to give to each volunteer. Pat has been choosing recipes to make for this rally and the Quartzsite rally after that, such as appetizers, desserts, and salads. Laurie has had a variety of projects that he’s worked on, and Pat got into playing some solitaire games on her computer. We haven’t been as active as we’d like to be because of the weather but did do a bike ride. We continued watching the “Narcos” series in the evenings and just finished Season 2. One more season to go but it will have to wait because of the rallies. We also spent some time getting ready to depart on January 7th for the 2 weeks away from Sun Vista at the 2 rallies. This included cleaning, laundry, grocery planning and pickup, prepping the RV, etc. Mom celebrated her 90th birthday on the 1st. We did a Zoom call that included the two of us, Daniel, Nicole, Robin, Sijia, Evie, Ollie, Adam, and, of course, Mom and Dad. It was great to see everyone and chat a bit.

January 7, 2023
Time to start making our way to Indio, CA, for the Beaver Rally where we are co-rally masters. We left Sun Vista about 2:00 heading to Fantasy Springs Casino, about a 2 ½ hour drive (and a 1 hour time change), to overnight in their free boondocking lot. Fellow Beavers were supposed to meet up there for a morning drive to the Riverside County Fairgrounds a short distance away but we only saw one other Beaver that spent the night. Since tomorrow is Pat’s b-day but we’ll be busy, we picked up her dinner request of Popeye’s Fried Chicken for dinner. It was yummy!

January 8, 2023
More Beavers joined up with us in the lot and we all caravanned over to the fairgrounds. We were in the staging area for a long time (they seemed very disorganized this year) before they led us over to our area. We are parked together around a square gathering area with the rally masters (Cathi & Mike Stark on one side) and us on the other side. We are the co-rally masters for this rally, basically doing whatever Cathi and Mike need us to do. Laurie is also in charge of the Beaver security people providing security at the fairground gates and the vendor exhibit building during FMCA’s Western Area rally. We spent the afternoon getting settled in and setting up the square for our dinner gatherings. About 4:30 everyone met up there and brought heavy appetizers for a delicious variety of food. Cathi dispensed a lot of information and then we spent a little time chatting with other Beavers before the cold that crept in after the sun went down at about 6:30. During the evening Pat had birthday phone calls with Daniel and Nicole, as well as Mom and Dad in Hawaii. Robin and family sent email and Steam b-day wishes.

January 9-15, 2023
It was a busy but fun week. For the security part of the rally Laurie scheduled everyone to work the various posts around the fairgrounds, then checked in to make sure everyone knew what to do. about mid-week he was provided with a golf cart to use which made getting around the large fairgrounds much easier. There were two ice cream socials during the rally where we took ice cream bars to the people on duty so they didn’t miss out on the treats. Both of us also worked four early morning (8-11am) security shifts at the main gate which wasn’t so bad once the sun warmed things up. For the FMCA rally coffee and donuts were available each morning. We also visited the vendors building and walked through some of the new coaches on display for sale. There was also a pulled pork dinner provided one evening for all volunteers. Three of the nights entertainment was provided. The Flashback Boyz were pretty good singing mostly 50’s and 60’s music. We skipped the comedian. The last night was a Creedance Clearwater Revival tribute band that was also good. For our Beaver rally we gathered in an area within our parked coaches each evening for happy hour, dinner, and visiting. Dinners included everyone bringing “heavy” appetizers, grilled burgers and dogs, walking tacos, pizza, and a catered Italian dinner. There were various desserts that people brought and also an ice cream bar with lots of toppings one evening. Most nights a propane firepit was set up in the middle of our circle of chairs to provide light and warmth. As co-rally masters we helped a lot of with set up and clean up, and picking up food. Also at this rally our Hydro Hot, which hadn’t worked properly for a while, was serviced at our RV spot by Howard’s. It was about $700 for a new coil but it was great to get it fixed before we head to the Quartzsite desert with its cold nights. We got to know most of our fellow Beavers a little better. Everyone throughout the week was very friendly and welcoming. We had a great time!

January 15, 2023
A group of Beavers went over to the Elks Lodge for breakfast but we were busy getting our coach ready to depart. We were ready quicker than we thought so we called the RV park that we’ll be headed to, The Palms at River Edge, to arrange to get in a bit earlier than their 2:00 check-in time. It was about a 90 minute drive from Indio to the park which is just over the border into Arizona. It was great to have full hook-ups again, especially water for long, hot showers. After dumping and filling tanks and giving the interior a quick cleaning, we started the first of 4 loads of laundry then relaxed with happy hour and Italian leftovers from last night’s catered dinner back in Indio.

January 16, 2023
Pat started her morning making pecan bars to take to the next rally. After breakfast and finishing up the laundry, we got the RV ready for travel. It was only about a ½ drive to the rally area which is located 7 miles south of the town of Quartzsite. When we arrived shortly after noon and went to put out the slides, the front driver’s side slide wouldn’t go out because the track the rollers ride on had broken on one side. We’ll have to keep that slide in until we can have it looked at. When we fired up the Hydro Hot for the first time we found that, although it worked, it still put out a lot of white smoke. We’ll have to have it looked at again. Since it was very windy we just stayed in the coach, reading and relaxing. In the evening the wind continued and we had a downpour with a little bit of thunder which sounded nice on the RV roof.

January 17, 2023
The morning was spent relaxing some more since the rally doesn’t officially start until later in the afternoon. Pat put together a pan of ham and Swiss sliders to bring for the heavy appetizer dinner at 4:30. We registered and got the rally information packet before then. There was a huge spread of appetizers since there are about 45 coaches at the rally. Everything we had was delicious. Following dinner 2 big bonfires were started but we chose to go inside and read because we don’t care for the heavy smoke and it was also getting cold. It gets down to the upper 30’s at night.

January 18, 2023
Rally attendees were divided into 4 teams to help with preparing, serving, and cleaning up after meals. Today was our team’s day, and we were with the half of the team that handled breakfast. We were out in the cold and dark about 7:15 to have everything ready by 9:00. Today’s menu was French toast, scrambled eggs, ham, and orange juice. There was also coffee and tea provided. Laurie helped with the cooking on the grills. Pat cracked about 100 eggs (more than 200 eggs were used). After breakfast Pat helped wash dishes while Laurie grilled ground beef to be used for the taco dinner. After working for almost 4 hours we returned to the RV to rest. Early afternoon we went wandering around the desert, collecting unusual stones and enjoying the desert and surrounding mountains. The wildlife we encountered included a single bird, a 5 inch lizard, and an endless amount of ants. After another rest in the RV we headed over for a dinner of taco stew and salad followed by an assortment of desserts. We also enjoyed conversations with old and new acquaintances.

January 19, 2023
Another cold start to the morning. We warmed up a bit with a group breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and sausage patties which we took back to the coach to eat. At 11:00 we went to a seminar (outside in the cold wind) by fellow Beaver Fred Brooks who mostly talked about coach batteries. Saturday is the start of the Quartzsite RV Show but we decided to drive into town to see if by chance Blue Ox was set up yet to have our tow bar serviced. Unfortunately, they weren’t there yet so we headed back arriving in time to watch the “Beaver Races”. Beaver markers named for various Beaver coach models were moved forward on a big mat according to the results of foam dice thrown on the ground. People make $1 bets on the Beaver model that they thought would win with the money collected being divided among those who bet on the winning Beaver. Then it was back to the RV for a bit before returning for a delicious spaghetti and meatball dinner with salad, garlic bread, and dessert. Our evening was relaxing in the coach out of the cold and smoke from the campfires.

January 20, 2023
Another in-coach breakfast of scrambled eggs with biscuits and gravy out of the morning cold. Late morning Laurie went to a seminar on RV maintenance while Pat stayed in the coach going through her recipe box. During our hamburger dinner we got a call from a Hydro Hot repair company we had set up service with so we hurried to finish eating and went back to meet the repair guy. He fixed the problem of the Hydro Hot dispensing stinky white smoke when running so we can finally use it without annoying our neighbors. (It’s funny how just about any time a repair is going on at an RV a group of men gather to observe and chat.)

January 21, 2023
We missed the last breakfast as we headed into to town before 8:30 to have drop off our Blue Ox tow bar for maintenance service when the RV show opened at 9:00 (one arm locks up and won’t retract). We lucked out with a parking spot right by the Blue Ox tent which had start taking tow bars a little early. We were about 6th in line. After dropping it off we went back to the RV to wait for their call saying the tow bar was ready not knowing if it would be today, tomorrow, or even later. In the meantime, Laurie visited with the neighbors while Pat read inside. Early afternoon we got the call and hurried into town to pick it up the tow bar. Back at the RV we packed up for the 1 ½ hour drive back to Yuma leaving about 2:30. After arriving at Sun Vista we settled back into our site, ate dinner, and started watching the last season of Narcos. It was wonderful to have full hook-ups again!

January 22 – February 23, 2023
Back to the routine of Yuma with absolutely nothing planned. Most days consist of a light breakfast, maybe a little snack, dinner, and sometimes ice cream. (We have a lot of Costco ice cream bars from the Indio rally as they gave us more than we needed.) The weather is a bit on the cool side and often breezy. One day was very windy and we even lost power for several hours. Evenings we finished the Narcos series and started Homeland.

We have ridden our bikes around the park, played mini golf, and played some shuffleboard. We haven’t sat on the patio much since it’s been a little cool. Pat pulled out her cross-stich project for the first time in a long time, played some Steam games, and did some future cruise planning. Laurie has endless projects around the RV and on the computer that keeps him busy. And, both of us have many books going on our Kindles. The park doesn’t have many empty sites, so it seems to have returned to pre-pandemic levels. There are more people walking/riding/driving around the park and the outdoor pool is packed on warmer days. We did venture to a Saturday morning farmers market in the Yuma Palms Shopping Center parking lot. There was fresh produce, lots of craft work (especially jewelry), various homemade foods and foods/drinks to consume there. Almost everything was overpriced but it was something to do.

One day we drove the RV to CJ’s RV Repair in the Foothills to have the front driver’s side slide repaired since the tracks it rides on were in bad shape. We had scheduled this a month in advance. We were able to hang out in the RV for the 5 hours it took, reading and eating lunch. Laurie was able to observe what the guy, Mikey, was doing and help out a bit. They did a very good job for a reasonable price ($650) and we would recommend them to others.

The weather continued to be cooler than we like and there was a little bit of rain, but we also had a few warmer, sunny days to relax on the patio in the afternoon. Before we had the RV repaired we grilled a few times, but after the repair we decided to leave it packed up since we cleaned it before putting it away.

February 23 – February 28, 2023
We had planned to depart for the trip home today (Thursday, February 23rd). We prepped the RV for travel on the 21st since the 22nd had been forecast to have strong winds around 30 mph. On the 22nd we started hearing about incoming snowstorms in Southern California including blizzard warnings for the Grapevine/Tejon Pass that we need to drive through, as well as extremely unusual lowland snow, high winds, and heavy rain. We decided to play it safe and stay put in Sun Vista for another 3 days until Sunday the 26th when the nasty weather was supposed to be done. It proved to be a good idea since on the 24th the weather radar for a large portion of California was lit up with heavy snow and rain. It got so bad that I5 was shut down because of snow, ice, flooding, a stuck truck, and a mudslide!

On Sunday, I5 remained closed until about 2:00 in the afternoon, which was too late for us to leave and make it  to an overnight spot on the other side of the Grapevine before dark. Sunday night it looked like there might be a window of opportunity Monday morning to get through the Grapevine despite a Winter Weather Warning, but again we decided to play it safe (after looking at weather and road condition reports and forecasts), since there were also high wind warnings and advisories against campers/trailers as well as light snow forecast. It was a beautiful, sunny, mid-60 day in Yuma so we didn’t suffer too much.

Looking at the weather for Tuesday it looked like there might be another window in the morning with increasing snow later in the day, with the worst of the storm happening on Wednesday. Once again we decided to play it safe and made the decision to stay until Thursday morning when the Grapevine weather looked good for the foreseeable future. When we went to the office to pay for our additional days, they said that a lot of people were extending their stays because of the weather.

February 28 – March 1, 2023
The 28th was a beautiful day and we were able to get in a last happy hour relaxing in the sun on the patio. Wednesday, March 1st, started and ended sunny but in between it got extremely windy, clouded up, and rained off and on. (I5 was closed for a while again because of snow and wind so we made the right choice staying until Thursday).

March 2, 2023 – Thursday
Finally time to head home! We were on our way by 7:00’ish Arizona time, stopping to top-off the RV fuel at Arizona prices. It was a sunny and clear day. There were some pockets of stop-and-go traffic going through the Los Angeles area, but he Grapevine (the part of I5 closed at times due to snow), was dry pavement however, there was snow on the sides of the road. After a long day we pulled into Harris Ranch Inn and Restaurant in Coalinga, CA, about 4:00. They allow RV parking in a paved lot between the hotel and restaurant. There were a lot of RVs there as the gas station next door which used to have a large truck and RV parking lot, was now taken over by Tesla for a charging area with dozens of charging stations. Harris Ranch had a sign that they will be building an RV park so the free parking in their lot will most likely be eliminated at some point. In the gas station was a Harris Ranch BBQ Express pickup place. In the parking lot heading into the building was a humongous smoker going which smelled glorious. We got a half-rack of 6 ribs to split along with sides of mac & cheese, and mashed potatoes and gravy. The flavor of the ribs was outstanding but they were kind of dry and had chewy spots which put up a fight. Also, the food was not very hot. Given the parking situation, including having to pay in the future, and the food, we probably won’t aim to stay here again. Our evening was spent relaxing and reading before turning in.

March 3, 2023 – Friday
We hit the road with the sunrise at 6:30 for a very long, mostly sunny day making our way north through California. It was a pretty, scenic drive a most of the time with endless fields of white blooming almond trees. We also saw fields of pistachio trees displaying their gnarly branches since they are still bare. Everything was very green after the recent rains including the many rolling hills dotted with black grazing cattle. Most of the drive there were snow covered mountains in the distance for a majestic backdrop. Once we made it to Northern California in the Mt. Shasta area there was more snow around but not on the roads which were dry. It was mostly overcast here. Next up was Siskiyou Pass which was also dry pavement. No problems at all with roads, traffic, and weather at all today. We made it to the Seven Feathers boondocking lot about 4:30, and spent the evening doing a little packing, eating dinner, and relaxing for our last day of driving.

March 4, 2023 – Saturday
Once again we were on our way with the 6:30 sunrise, but it was gloomy and raining today. It was a good decision to push ourselves to get as far as Seven Feathers yesterday since there was heavy snow on the parts of I5 that we had just traveled on. We would have been stuck in California waiting for good road conditions again! Today we just had to contend with rain which wasn’t a problem at all, although it lasted almost the entire trip except for the last hour of driving. After unpacking the RV and parking it in the storage unit, we made it home by 3:00 to the smiling faces of Daniel and Nicole! We were so happy to see them and to be home. They did an outstanding job of taking care of the house and helping us unpack everything, and Nicole prepared a yummy tortellini dinner for us. It was a wonderful homecoming.

Yuma – 2022

December 7, 2021
Here we go again! We departed the storage unit just after 9:00 for another trip to warm, sunny Yuma. Mom and Dad are joining us on this 3+ month adventure after spending four wonderful days visiting with the family in Mukilteo. This included a “Thanksgivakkah” celebration when we had a full Thanksgiving turkey dinner followed with Hanukkah candle-lighting as well as our traditional clues and searching for Hanukkah gifts. Evie was the center of attention though, providing endless adorable entertainment. We all had a blast – lots of laughter, smiles, and hugs. Our late start today was due to it being a weekday. There was a little bit of traffic at the start but then our travels were uneventful. Most of the day had us driving through varying degrees of fog. At times it got drizzly but we did have a short patch of sunshine in Oregon. Our only stops were a quick quiche and muffin lunch, and gassing up at the Seven Feathers Truck Stop. We arrived at Seven Feathers RV Park about 5-5:30 in darkness. In order to save almost $40 Laurie took the park shuttle over to the casino to renew his Player’s Club card. We then settled in, enjoyed a spaghetti dinner, visited for a while, then turned in early after a long day.

December 8, 2021
Everyone was up before 6:00 without a problem after going to bed early. We fueled up with coffee and biscochos and were on the road ahead of schedule just before 7:00 while it was still dark. The Siskiyou Mountains straddling the Oregon-California border were foggy and misty but the roads were fine to drive on. The rest of the drive included more fog, drizzle, and gloomy overcast skies. We took a quick break about 11:30 at a rest stop for another lunch of quiche and muffins. We arrived at Flag City RV Resort in Lodi, CA, about 3:00. It was nice to arrive before dark. However, we had an issue with the front drivers slide. After putting it out the hydraulic pump motor wouldn’t stop running. The only way to stop the motor was to disconnect the coach house batteries. None of the RV service places Laurie contacted could come out until morning and all were expensive. He ended up spending a couple hours researching the problem online, and eventually went to bed thinking of the best solution.

December 9, 2021
This morning Laurie did a work-around by crawling under the front of the RV and disconnecting the solenoid output cable. This allowed us to reconnect the house batteries. He’ll have to keep connecting and disconnecting the cable each time we need to extend or retract the slides until we get to Yuma where he can do a permanent fix. Not too bad as problems go, though. Forty minutes behind schedule we were back on the road at 7:40. The morning was overcast but it was dry with no fog to start, but returned to that misty gloom as we approached the Bakersfield area. All was good until we hit the Los Angeles area traffic which took us about 3 hours to slog our way through. We arrived at Banning Stagecoach KOA towards 6:00 in the cold, rainy dark. The park had confusing afterhours instructions, and it had very poor lighting so it was extremely hard to find our way to a spot. The spot we chose (68) that looked okay was really too short for us as our front was right up at the street and the back end of the tow car stuck out slightly into the street behind us, but it was too dark and nasty to try to find a different spot. Miraculously the solenoid started working properly again after Laurie hooked up the disconnected wire under the front of the RV! We had a quick, easy dinner of sandwiches and chips, relaxed a bit, then turned in around 9:00.

December 10, 2021
A sunny morning for a change! We had our coffee and biscochos, and were travelling once again by 7:15. The temperature progressively got warmer as we got closer to our destination. With very little traffic we arrived at Sun Vista RV Resort before noon local time (which is an hour later than WA). We spent a short time hooking up and putting out the slides then had our usual quiche and muffins. Laurie and Dad went to the office to check-in for both of our sites, stopping at their park model to drop off their suitcases before returning to the RV to gather up Pat and Mom and a few remaining supplies. Another quick trip to the park model to drop them and their stuff off, leaving them for the afternoon to unpack and settle in. We did more of our own settling in with Laurie mainly working outside and Pat inside. It warmed up to almost 70 with partly cloudy skies which was wonderful after all of the chilly, rainy, foggy weather we drove through. M&D came over for dinner then returned to their place shortly after dinner as everyone was a bit tired.

December 11, 2021
Another sunny day, with many more to follow. After checking in at the mailroom to get keys, our day was spent in the RV with Laurie tweaking the internet and Pat cleaning, going through recipes, and reading. M&D joined us for dinner (manicotti) and a visit. We don’t have TV yet as the cable box broke, and we are waiting for a cable box to come on Tuesday so our evenings are spent doing odds and ends.

December 12, 2021
We’ve continued to do things to set up the RV as our home for the next 3 months, as well as doing some relaxing. We enjoy our early mornings when it’s still dark so we get to see the sunrise over the mountains out the front window. Mom and Dad joined us for dinner and a visit in the late afternoon. In the evenings we started watching the comedy series Sch*tt’s Creek which is pretty entertaining (Nicole’s recommendation.)

December 13, 2021
This morning started with a large Walmart pickup for both us and M&D. Laurie’s incision looks like it needs more silver nitrate treatments so after checking around we visited Nextcare Urgent Care where they provided prescriptions for that as well as an antibiotic. We’re back into our old routine of Mom fixing dinner on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with Pat covering the other days. While eating at M&D’s we use their washer and dryer to wash larger items that are too big/heavy for the RV washer combo.

December 14-15, 2021
These two days were mostly spent trying to get Laurie’s prescriptions ordered and find which places have the best prices on it. Late afternoon Tuesday and through early morning we had very windy weather. So much so that Laurie picked up M&D to bring them over for dinner and returned them home afterwards. Today was the annual parade of holiday decorated golf carts at sundown. There were quite a few and it was fun to watch them all drive by the RV. Later in the evening there was also a brief, wind-driven downpour which always sounds nice on the RV roof. Wednesday Mom made her outstanding meatballs which we always enjoy. More Sch_tt’s Creek in the evenings.

December 16, 2021
We were out early to get the car washed and gassed up for the hour-long trip to Costco in El Centro, CA. We picked up M&D just before 9:00, arriving at Costco at 9:00 local time (time change from AZ to CA) which is the start of senior hour. We both filled our carts with necessities and some things that weren’t quite so necessary but yummy! It was a nice day for a drive. We had jazzed up leftover ramen noodles with chicken and vegetables from Tuesday night so it was an easy dinner.

December 17-18, 2021
We had a couple of repetitive days of just doing our own thing during the day. Mom made a delicious salmon dinner on Friday, then Saturday ate up leftovers (Salmon from Friday and meatballs from Wednesday). Everything tasted even better the second time around!

December 19, 2021
Today was our 7-hour roundtrip trek to Tucson to pick up Nicole at the airport. We’re so happy to have her here for an 11 night stay on the RV! She had a smooth, on-time flight on Alaska Air arriving about 3:30. A “picnic” dinner of sandwiches while driving back provided our meal for the evening. It was after 7:00 and dark when we returned to the RV where Nicole settled in, and we visited and watched a little TV. Towards 8:30 Nicole was beat from her long day so we all turned in for the night.

December 20, 2021
We had coffee and watched news in our bedroom until Nicole awoke (about 7:00). We relaxed inside for a part of the morning, then moved out to the patio while Laurie checked and filled the tires on the bikes, RV, and car. Then it was time for a tour of the pak for Nicole! After stopping by M&D’s/G&G’s to have a short visit and pick them up, we toured most of the amenities of Sun Vista. Since we ended at the shuffleboard courts it seemed appropriate to initiate Nicole to the game. Laurie served as referee/scorekeeper while Nicole and Dad teamed up against Pat and Mom. Nicole and Dad ended up winning, and for her first time ever playing shuffleboard Nicole had earned the most points of anyone! We think she’s hooked! The Fun Park is the only area in the park that remains to be explored – we’ll save that for another day. We had a short rest at the RV then it was time to go back to M&D’s. Mom magically transformed a Costco chicken into mouthwatering, lemony, garlicy Greek chicken. Yum! Our evening was ended with more Sch*tt’s Creek and retiring early again.

December 21, 2021
After many phone calls throughout the week we finally picked up two of the prescriptions that were prescribed for Laurie a week ago when he visited the urgent care place. Let the healing begin! It was an overcast day but around 70 degrees so a good day for Laurie to grill some yummy chicken and zucchini to go with baked potatoes. We’re still making our way through Sch*tt’s Creek in the evenings.

December 22, 2021
Today we completed Nicole’s park tour by taking her to the Fun Park. Activities here include bocce ball, horseshoes, miniature golf, golf driving practice, a batting cage, pickleball courts, and a large remote-control car racing track. Laurie and Nicole tried out the bocce ball then all of us played a 9-hole round of mini golf. Laurie was the winner. The weather was mostly sunny and in the mid-70’s so it was great to be outdoors and get a little sun. Mom/Grandma made her wonderful chicken with soup, cheese and croutons. It’s a dish everyone always looks forward to.

December 23, 2021
Another sunny, mid-70’s day! Although it was perfect weather outside, Nicole and Pat went swimming in the indoor pool which they had to themselves. (The outdoor pool/hot tub area was busy with others enjoying the nice day but not being very covid safe.) They had fun in the pool playing with pool noodles and a beach ball, and finished up with a soak in the hot tub. Back at the RV it was very pleasant to sit out on the patio for a while before clouds moved in. Laurie grilled some of his delicious cheeseburgers which we had along with oven fries and coleslaw. It was a very tasty, satisfying meal. After M&D headed back to their place, we continued our Sch*tt’s Creek watching.

December 24, 2021
Rain! It started raining overnight and continued until late morning with the wind picking up as the rain faded. (Yuma averages only 2.7 days of rain in December, 15.2 days in the year.) It’s a chance to get the dust washed off everything – at least temporarily. We went out early to pick-up a Fry’s order to try to get some of the items that Walmart was missing, but it was just as bad as Walmart. As always we’ll just have to make do with what we have. Nicole spent a big part of the day making frosted, star-shaped sugar cookies. M&D provided some yummy leftovers for dinner and we watched our series in the evening.

December 25-27, 2021
We mostly spent time relaxing. We did take a nice, long walk around the perimeter of the park. In the Fun Park the RC Club was racing several cars around the track. These are large cars about 15 inches long. It was a blast to watch them flying around the dirt course, flipping, crashing, and mostly staying upright. We finished up our walk which took just over 3,000 steps according to Nicole’s watch. Another day we hit the shuffleboard courts with the “Guys” (Laurie/Dad) pitted against the “Dolls” (Nicole/Mom). Pat kept score and the Guys ended up winning. It’s been a little bit on the cooler, cloudier side but still a lot better than the snow and upper-teen temperatures back home! Mom and Pat made some delicious dinners and in the evening we continued watching Sch*tt’s Creek.

December 28, 2021
Today was mostly sunny but still slightly cool and breezy – a good time to go hiking! Mid-morning we headed out, stopping first in the Yuma Proving Grounds to look at their display of tanks and rocket launchers. It was kind of eerie to imagine the destruction these monstrous machines were capable of in their prime. Then it was on to the Imperial Wildlife Refuge which is about 45 minutes from Sun Vista. The visitor’s center was closed so we continued on to the Painted Desert Trail which was our destination. The hike was 1.3 miles long with a few ups and downs. Parts of it were over the varied colored hills (thus the name) which provided expansive views from the top, and part of it was through washes with rock walls on either side. The first part of the hike had some numbered features which were described on a paper provided at the start of the hike. It was interesting to learn about what we were looking at. We were the only ones there at the start but upon our return there was another car parked next to us with two women inside. It turned out that not only were they from Washington, but they are also staying at Sun Vista! Our evening was the usual – M&D joining us for dinner followed by several episodes of Sch*tt’s Creek.

December 29, 2021
Nicole’s last day here so it was her choice of what to do for the day. For the morning she just wanted to relax on the RV and pack. In the afternoon we picked up M&D as we walked to the Fun Park for a rousing game of miniature golf. It was a lot of fun and everyone did pretty well. The day was mostly sunny so it was a beautiful day to be outside. Afterwards we returned to M&D’s since Mom was cooking dinner. We had a nice visit before returning to the RV for more show watching.

December 30, 2021
Today was spent getting Nicole back to Mukilteo. The drive to the Tucson airport was about 3 ½ hours. We stopped close to Tucson for a picnic lunch in the car next to an orchard with a pretty view of mountains. We kept watching Nicole’s flight which kept getting delayed from it’s original departure time of 4:00 to 5:38 because of flight delays due to snowy weather in Washington. We sat in the cell phone lot at the airport until we had confirmation that the airplane for her flight was departing for Tucson from Everett, then we dropped her at the terminal where she waited. We made the long drive back arriving just after 5:30 which was just about the rime that Nicole’s flight finally took off for the return trip to Everett. We ran into a bit of rain on the way back which produced a magnificent rainbow where we could see the entire arch in the open landscape. Daniel was tracking Nicole’s flight (everyone was!) from home and picked her up at Paine Field after the flight landed at 8:00. It was a long day which we ended by watching the last of Sch*tt’s Creek. Time to find a new series!

December 31, 2021
A rainy start to the day which saw us head out for a 7:00 am Walmart pickup. Did some laundry, prepped for Mom’s birthday tomorrow, spent some time gaming, and had dinner at M&D’s. We took a break before we start watching a new series in the evenings and opted for computer time.

January 1, 2022
Happy New Year and Happy Birthday Mom! A breezy, cool day. M&D joined us in the afternoon for a Birthday-Happy-Hour followed by a dinner of Bang Bang Shrimp and snap peas. Then we watched a movie called “Baraka” which was a documentary film with no narrative or voice-over. It explored themes via a compilation of natural events, life, human activities and technological phenomena shot in 24 countries on six continents over a 14-month period. It was interesting and had some great scenes in it. However, it would have been nice if it had captions indicating where the shots were filmed. We perked up afterwards when we had Mom’s birthday cake – a dessert with layers of pecan shortbread, Cool Whip mixed with cream cheese, lemon pudding, Cool Whip, and chopped pecans. Yum! Nothing like a little sugar to end the day!

January 2-7, 2022
Days have started to resemble one another. The weather has been sunny or partly-sunny with the temperature getting a degree or two warmer each day to finally put us in the low 70’s most days. We’ve done some walks and bike rides, and sat out on the patio soaking up the warmth of the sun. We continue alternating who cooks dinner, and Mom did a wonderful brunch one day with all the lox and bagel fixings. We started watching Game of Thrones (GOT) and have already made it to season 2. Despite Pat’s misgivings, we both are enjoying the series.

January 8, 2022
Pat’s birthday! The day started with a gorgeous, intensely-colored sunrise. M&D also sent an early morning birthday greeting along with an email Amazon gift card. Most of the day was spent lazing around, both inside and outside. We did venture out early afternoon to redeem Pat’s free birthday drink at a Starbucks in the foothills. Pat’s drink of choice (to share) was a venti Pistachio Coffee Frappuccino. It was very good but tasted more like caramel than pistachio. Throughout the day the kids were in touch by various means and we talked to them later in the afternoon. They also had arranged birthday cards and gifts (computer games and hummingbird feeders) which Pat opened in the afternoon. Mom made a delicious birthday dinner starting with fruit-loaded sangria and ending with a candle topped cheesecake. As usual, everything she made was very flavorful. The evening ended with a couple more episodes of GOT.

January 9 – February 14, 2022
Life has been fairly routine so we haven’t had much to add to the blog. On our own we’ve done some bike riding, relaxed in the sun on the patio, relaxed in the RV (computer time/games, cross-stitch, reading, etc.), finished watching “Game of Thrones”, started watching “24”, and did our weekly Walmart grocery pickups. We continue to take turns fixing dinners with mom & dad, made a Costco run to El Centro (about an hour away), and went swimming in the indoor pool/hot tub when the weather warmed up. We had the indoor pool and hot tub all to ourselves as everyone else was at the outdoor pool/hot tub! Mom had an issue with a loose tooth so we got her in to see a dentist (Gila Ridge Dental, Dr. Thor Thorson). The first step was to have the tooth removed. They took care of that during the visit and it came out quickly and painlessly with Novocain.  She’s very happy with the dentist and we will schedule another visit in a couple weeks to see if her gum is healed and if she wants to proceed with a “false tooth” to fill the gap. During some of our daily 4:00-6:00 dinner gatherings Laurie has started filming M&D talking about theirs life experiences (separately and together) for the current family and future generations to enjoy.

The weather was slightly cool and somewhat breezy for a while which kept us from playing shuffleboard. Then all of a sudden we had a blast of heat with mid-80 degree temperatures for several days in a row. Starting tomorrow it’s supposed to be back in the 70’s which is more the norm for this time of year. There’s been absolutely no rain and very few clouds. We continue to enjoy our stay but we also very much miss the family across the country.

February 15 – March 16, 2022
Our unexciting, but very relaxing, time in Yuma continues. We did get in a little more swimming and shuffleboard. The temperature has ranged from 70 on up to 90 degrees with no rain. There almost always seems to be varying degrees of a breeze from very little to very gusty with wind and blowing dust advisories. Our alternating dinners continued with an eye towards using up what we have on hand to lessen our load for the trip home. We spent sunny time on the patio as well as enjoying time conversing with Mom and Dad. The last couple days before departing were spent cleaning inside, preparing “road food”, washing the outside window coverings, preparing the water softener for storage, and generally getting organized for departure on the 17th.

March 17, 2022
We were loaded up, including M&D, and on the road by 7:00 on another cloudless morning. After gassing up the RV at Love’s in Yuma we officially hit the road about 7:45. Our travels took us through desert, Joshua Trees, rock formations, views of distant snow-capped mountains, and green rolling hills. Our brunch stop today was a little past Palm Springs and consisted of broccoli quiche and poppyseed  muffins. We arrived at Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield, CA, about 3:15 and settled in amongst the orange trees. Unfortunately, although there were still some oranges on the trees, we couldn’t pick them because the blossoms of the next crop were already on the trees. A funny thing happened when one of our RV neighbors started to come into our RV by mistake. He had an armful of snacks but sadly for us they were for his grandkids. A little later he stopped by and gave us some oranges he picked up at a fruit stand as an apology. Happy hour consisted of some good conversation following by leftover “Loaded Baked Potato Soup” and cornbread. In the evening Laurie tutored Dad on some techniques for completing sudoku puzzles while Mom and Pat chatted and did their own thing. We also made a call to Gloria in Sydney as it was her birthday and had a nice chat. We hope to see her when we cruise from Australia in Spring 2023.

March 18, 2022
Once again we were able to start our travels at 7:00 after having some coffee and biscochos. It was a chilly 49 degrees but bright and sunny when we departed. The drive was pretty uneventful. We took Route 99 instead of I5 and there weren’t any rest stops so we ate while Laurie drove with him munching on biscochos. With no stops for brunch or gas we made it to Rolling Hills Casino RV Park a little after 2:00. The park road to get into our site (29) had a short stretch just before the site that looked like it had been bombed. Even going really slow the RV rocked from side-to-side like crazy with stuff in the cabinets banging and the passenger slide moving in and out at the top. Have to remember not to pick sites in that row again!  Once we were in the spot it was very nice with trees just outside the windows that were just starting to get leaves and lots of little song birds and mourning doves singing or cooing to us. The sky started to slowly haze up with clouds which was an indicator of what was to come. We had another enjoyable Happy Hour following by yummy meatloaf that Mom had made back in Yuma and froze accompanied by mashed potatoes and leftover soup. The evening was spent watching part of a Beatles documentary until we were all too tired to continue.

March 19, 2022
Even though today was a little bit shorter drive, we still pulled out about 7:00 after coffee and biscochos. On the way out we stopped at the Rolling Hills gas station to get a little bit of fuel (40 gallons) to get us to Seven Feathers in Oregon where gas is cheaper. The pump was EXTREMELY slow and then turned off after about 20 gallons. Laurie tried to start it again to add more but his credit card was declined. He ended up going back and forth to the travel center numerous times to try to buy more gas but decided to give up after much wasted time with no results. (Also, this was the truck area and all the window cleaning tools were short and would not reach our window! Not good planning on the station’s part. A short drive down the highway we got the rest of the gas at Love’s, but that ended up being a bit of a pain and time consuming as well. Finally, we were on our way with today being the day we went through mountains. It was a mixed bag of weather with various degrees of rain, fog, and even a bit of sun. At least there wasn’t any snow! We pulled into Seven Feathers RV Resort before 2:00. It had the most sites filled that we’ve ever seen but we were lucky enough to get the second to last pull-thru spot. Next time we’ll make a reservation just to be safe. We relaxed during the afternoon, had another delicious meatloaf and mashed potato dinner, and watched some more of the Beatles’ documentary.

March 20, 2022
A very cold (32 degree) start to the day. We fortified ourselves with coffee and biscochos before starting our last day on the road just after 7:00. The first part of the drive was foggy and frosty which made for some pretty scenery. The sun made a quick appearance before clouds took over and we had off and on rain showers. We stopped for another quick quiche and muffin brunch at a rest stop in southern Washington. Then it was time for the final leg of our journey home! There were a few pockets of traffic but we made it to our RV’s cozy storage unit about 2:30. After unhooking the car and backing the RV into unit, we loaded everything we could into the car, including M&D! We’ll got the rest the next morning after we make a grocery pickup at Fred Meyer. At last we arrived home about 3:15 to the waiting smiles of Daniel and Nicole! It was so wonderful to see them and exchange hugs. They did a great job of taking care of the house while we were away. After putting stuff away and visiting for a bit, Nicole made a delicious Mexican Picadillo dinner with cornbread which really hit the spot after a long day on the road. A little more visiting after dinner and then the “travelers” turned in early to rest up for time together over the next week. Our trip to Yuma may be over but we still have time together and plans for the future. Next adventure: Vision of the Seas cruise at the end of April!

Home again, Home again (via a few Nat’l Parks)…

After four months in Yuma, and another four weeks to and in Skokie, it is time to head home! It will be very sad to part with mom/dad after being with them for the past 15 months, but we are looking forward to seeing them again in the fall for our Barcelona cruise.

Our route home has us taking our time to see several national parks on the way. Our plan has us visiting Arches National Park, followed by Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion National Park – and then Yosemite National Park before heading up to Mukilteo. Our itinerary is as follows:

May 2, 2021

A gorgeous morning for the next chapter of our travels: sunny with a few clouds and 70 degrees by our 8:00 am departure. Today’s route was through an abundance of farms through Illinois and Iowa so the scenery was a little repetitive. A mid-morning rest stop for something to eat provided a break in the driving. We arrived at Cabela’s in La Vista, Nebraska, about 4:00 pm where it was 88 degrees. We relaxed for a while, had a dinner of grilled turkey and Swiss sandwiches with chips, and then walked around for a little bit to stretch our legs. We shared the truck/RV parking behind Cabela’s with three other trucks and it worked out well. Overnight we experienced an intense thunderstorm (at least by Western Washington standards). There was torrential rain, hail, high winds, and nearly nonstop lightening and thunder. All the while we were snug in our bed on the RV and enjoyed hearing the storm around us, although it did interrupt our sleep for a short time. It had the side-benefit of knocking some dust off the RV and car.

May 3, 2021
An overcast, cooler start to the day when we hit the road at 7:00 am. It was another day of farms but later, still in Nebraska, there were some cattle ranches. We stopped later in the morning at a rest stop for something to eat. While still in Nebraska we crossed into the Mountain Time Zone gaining an hour. A little while later we entered Colorado where the views varied from expanses of rolling hills with only short vegetation growing on them to farmland, and cattle ranches. About an hour or so before getting to our destination it started to rain steadily. We arrived at Emerald RV Park in Ft. Morgan, Colorado, about 2:00 (47 degrees) and the rain stopped! This park is really just an overpriced gravel parking spot with hookups. Kind of an ugly park. We look out at a big empty lot with a worn down house on it. The area did not have a good assortment of RV parks or places to boondock so it had to do.

May 4, 2021
We started an hour earlier than planned start – as “someone” forgot to set “her” alarm for the new time zone. After a pretty pink sunrise we were on the road before 6:00 am. The front window of the tow car had a thick layer of frost and there was patchy fog throughout the beginning of our drive. Once we drove through Denver we entered the Rocky Mountains which gave us a very scenic drive for all of our morning.  Our elevation was constantly up and down, peaking at 11,000 feet above sea level. In many areas we were at or above the snow level giving us beautiful snow blanketed scenery but the road was clear, dry, and gave us no problems except for some road construction reduced speeds. One area we encountered was all snow covered pine trees which was gorgeous. Pat caught a glimpse of several elk in this area. We drove through several ski resort areas where a few ski lifts were still running (but with very few passengers). We went through an area called Greenwood Canyon which had steep, layered walls of different colored rock which were cut over 3 million years ago by the Colorado River which ran alongside the highway on our drive.

The whole drive afforded us new spectacular views at every turn. Late morning we stopped at a rest area in Rifle, CO, again along the Colorado River, to have a nosh. We were surprised with a phone call from Mom, Dad, and Adam who were following our progress and saw that we stopped for a break. It was good to talk to them. We miss them very much! Once we entered Utah there were vast expanses of flat, shrub-dotted desert with mountains in the background. We pulled into Willows Springs Trail Dispersed Camping for our 3 night stay.

This is a free camping area with people in all kinds of RV’s, trucks, tents, vans, and cars parking all over the desert. The road in was very bumpy but got better, and about a half mile in we parked the RV in a spot that was mostly level. We are surrounded by incredible views including unique rock formations, green striped mountains, a long stretch of cliffs, wide open desert, and a range of snow-capped mountains. It’s VERY dusty, more so because we’re right by the road. Laurie peeked outside at 2:30 in the morning and said there were a lot of stars but some were obscured by clouds.

May 5 2021

We woke up to find we had about half a dozen new neighbors since we went to bed last night. Most were just sleeping in their cars or in tents. We didn’t hear a sound overnight. It was a beautiful sunny day in the high 70’s. We headed to Arches National Park just after 7:30 am and arrived before 8:00 am since it’s only a few miles away. Since Delicate Arch is the most iconic site in the park and it gets very busy, we decided to go there first.

We tried a short hike to a viewpoint but the arch was a mile away and left us wanting a better view. With some reluctance on Pat’s part, we decided to do the difficult rated 3 mile round trip hike to the arch. It’s rated difficult because the trail climbs almost 500 feet up a steep slickrock slope, has no shade, and has a 200 yard long narrow rock ledge that hugs the mountainside as you get near the arch. With patience, encouragement, and prodding by Laurie to keep Pat going, we made it to Delicate Arch. What a spectacular sight! It was as majestic as it’s pictures, especially as it was backed by the snowcapped La Sal Mountains. In all the hike took us about 2 ½ hours round trip. Having accomplished our main objective, we drove the road through the park stopping at various viewpoints including other arches and rock formations.

It is an amazing park with our 5 hours there well spent. Back at the RV we rested, rehydrated, napped, had dinner, and caught up on some computer stuff.

May 6, 2021
We had an extremely early start to our day as we stood outside stargazing at 1:00 am! Through a slight haze we saw a gorgeous sky heavily blanketed with stars in all directions, possible because there’s very little light pollution out here in the desert. We were back in bed by 1:15 am.

After starting our day for the second time, we headed out at 7:30 to Dead Horse Point State Park about ½ hour away. Our senior pass doesn’t work at state parks so it was $20 to enter. The main feature of this park is the awesome canyon and rock formations created by the Colorado River meandering through the bottom of the canyon, and Mother Nature in general. It was amazing to see all the exposed layers of history going back over 275 million years! We scrambled (rather than hiked) over varying layers of slickrock to get to better viewpoints. By 10:30 we had seen the canyon from the many viewpoints and were done with the park, but it was still so early.

On the way in we had seen signs and a turnoff for Canyonlands National Park and decided to go there since our senior pass got us in for free. The area we went to was called “Island in the Sky”. We drove along a high mesa (the “island”) with expansive canyons on 3 sides. The western canyon was formed by the Green River and the eastern canyon by the Colorado River.

The rivers join up in the canyons to the south. The best sight in the park for us was the iconic Mesa Arch which we did the ½ mile hike to. Pictures don’t do it justice. The arch forms a horizontal elongated window to 3 rock formations in the canyon behind it and the snowy La Sal Mountains in the distance. Everyone was taking turns taking pictures of each other here. This area made our 2 ½ hour stop at Canyonlands worth it. Back at our RV a lot of campers had cleared out so we took the opportunity to relocate the RV so we could make an early departure out a level exit to the gravel road without worrying about being blocked in by new campers who might come in overnight. Then it was time to rest, have an early dinner, catch up on some computer stuff while the generator was on for a little while, and just hang out until bedtime.

May 7, 2021
Laurie said it was a beautiful, reddish sunrise (Pat missed it by a few minutes). We wandered around the area to take pictures of the RV from different viewpoints. There also was a colorful hot air balloon which we saw take off and slowly rise up above the surrounding mountains. After a quick nosh for breakfast, we were on the road about 8:00 am. The start of today’s travel included more incredible mountains, rock formations, and canyons. It got a little greener as we went west and we started to see farms and cattle ranches, with the snowcapped Rockies in the far distance. We arrived at Cedar City KOA Journey about 1:15 and got settled into our back-in site with full hookups. It looks like a nice, clean park, although our view out the front window is of the park’s maintenance building (when we booked this was the very last site available for our size rig so we couldn’t be choosy). It was about 80 degrees today but with a strong wind making it pleasant, and blowing lots of small, round seeds around with every gust. We relaxed, enjoyed long hot showers, spent time on computers, ate dinner, and relaxed some more watching TV.

May 8, 2021
Another early start – then off to Bryce Canyon National Park, roughly 1 ½ hours away. We took a scenic route there through some mountains where the higher elevations still had pockets of snow and the temperature was 34 degrees. There were wonderful rock formations and colorful cliffs along the drive. We were stopping to take pictures before we even made it into the park. The park was a pleasant 50-60 degrees (good hiking weather), but there was a cold wind at times. Bryce Canyon is home to the largest collection of hoodoos (irregularly-eroded rock spires) in the world. The first part of our morning we spent at Bryce Amphitheater which is an enormous canyon filled with red, orange, and white hoodoos of various sizes and surrounded by tall cliffs. We hiked along the rim from Sunset Point to Sunrise Point (which was about a mile away), as well as stopped at Bryce Point which gave us views of a different part of the canyon. All amazing!

Next we drove the Scenic Southern Drive which is about 18 miles and has numerous viewpoints along the way. We stopped at Natural Bridge which is a huge orange hued arch that frames the beautiful distant scenery in it’s window, and also at Black Birch Canyon which was a lookout with more hoodoos and unique formations. The end of the road had 2 viewpoints close together, Rainbow Point (highest point in park at 9,115 feet) and Yovimpa Point, both having more spectacular views out over the canyon.

After we left the paid park area there was one more stop called Fairyland Point which was just as it’s name implies. It was a magical looking area of colorful hoodoo spires, each formation uniquely different from the next. We made the long drive back to the RV where it was in the mid-60’s and we did some planning for the next couple of days, called to wish Mom a Happy Mother’s Day a day early, ate pan grilled burgers for dinner, and spent time on our computers. A lot of time was spent driving today but it was absolutely worth it!

May 9, 2021
An early start: departing the RV just after 6:00 am, we made the long drive to Zion National Park arriving about 7:15.

The park was busy already. You need shuttle tickets to ride the shuttle buses along the Zion Canyon Scenic Road and we managed to snag a couple the night before for a 7:00-8:00 am departure from the visitor’s center. We hopped right on a shuttle about 7:45 and took it to the farthest point, Temple of Sinawava, arriving about 8:00 am. From this point we did the 2.2 mile Riverside Walk hike that follows the Virgin River.

The walk goes through a deep canyon with towering, sheer, vertical walls. There was greenery along the river, and at different points you could see distant mountains/cliffs with varying colors continuously changing due to the position of the sun over the canyon. At the end of the Riverwalk a second, more strenuous hike began called The Narrows Hike which is 9.4 miles round trip and is actually hiking through the river itself! A large percentage of the people doing the Riverwalk were continuing on in special clothing, shoes, and wooden walking sticks. This was not for us! Hopping on the shuttle we took it to another shuttle stop called Big Bend. From there we could look waaaay up to the top of a cliff where daredevils were walking along the rim to the top of Angels Landing, a 1,488-foot tall rock formation. The hike is steep with long drop-offs, but there are chains bolted into the cliff to provide secure handholds on the final stretch. It’s 5 miles round trip and gains almost 1,500 feet in elevation! Over the last 20 years 13 people having died on this hike. Another pass by us. We spoke with a park ranger at this location about endangered California Condors. He told us about the birds in the area and had a telescope set up through which we saw a juvenile Condor sitting high up on the cliff wall waiting for it’s parents to return. Next up was a shuttle stop where we did a very long hike.

The beginning was the Kayenta Trail which was a lot of up and down over rocks as well as up and down stairs. This trail hooked up to the Lower Emerald Pool Trail which took us down many stairs, between huge boulders, and across a small bridge into a grotto-like area with water dripping down the cliff sides from up high and ending up in a pretty green pool. The hike out was easier and ended at the next shuttle stop from where we started. Not really sure how far we hiked but it was a workout! A shuttle brought us back to the visitor’s center for Pat’s magnet shopping and Laurie stamping in his National Park Passport. It was time for a rest while we drove the extremely scenic Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, making numerous switchbacks on our way up the canyon with jaw-dropping views in every direction, and then through a 1.1 mile tunnel. After exiting the tunnel and seeing the long line of vehicles, including RV’s, waiting to go through the tunnel in the return direction, we ended up just continuing on the highway to the east entrance of the park which made our trip to the RV longer but at least it was very scenic. A lot of traffic was headed into the park as we were leaving about 1:30. With all our park visits we learned that it really pays to arrive very early ahead of the crowds. Mother’s Day dinner was mostaccioli from the freezer which Pat had made back in Illinois. A relaxing evening followed including phone calls with all 3 kids. We’re greatly looking forward to seeing them when we return home Sunday.

May 10, 2021
Left the RV park at 11:00 am after a relaxing morning as it’s a relatively short drive to our next stop (Walmart) and we don’t want to arrive too early. Today’s travels took us from Utah through the NW corner of Arizona, through southern Nevada, and into California. There was beautiful scenery along the way including green dotted mountains, rugged rocky mountains, and open desert areas. Some we drove through and others were in the distance. We arrived at Walmart in Barstow, CA, which has a huge gravel lot at the back of its regular parking lot. Although there were signs posted stating “No Trucks” and “No Overnight Parking” the lot had quite a few trucks and RV’s spend the night. We spoke with the store manager, and she indicated that we could stay overnight in their parking lot. Considering the comings and goings of trucks, and a busy railroad nearby, it was a pretty quiet night. Before we settled in for the evening we ventured into Walmart wearing masks and sanitizing our shopping cart to buy a few items we needed, including ice cream. Somehow the ice cream keeps evaporating from the RV freezer!

May 11, 2021
We left Walmart before 7:00 am. The drive was scenic at first but then we came into California civilization. A rest stop providied a spot for sandwiches along the way. We arrived at High Sierra RV Resort in Oakhurst, CA, about 1:00 and quickly hooked up and settled in. The park looks okay and is less than a half hour from the southern entrance of Yosemite. After the last of the leftover mostaccioli we relaxed and watched some TV.

May 12, 2021
Today was day one at Yosemite National Park and we focused on the Yosemite Valley floor. We left about 7:00 AM, arrived at the southern park entrance about 7:30, and finally arrived in the area of the visitor’s center around 8:30. Along the way we stopped at a viewpoint called Tunnel View, because you get an eyeful of jaw dropping views as you come out of a tunnel. The expansive view included El Capitan (a vertical 3,000 foot granite monolith popular with climbers), Horsetail Falls (couldn’t really see), Cloud Rest, Half Dome (5,000 foot tall rock formation that has a sheer face with 3 other rounded sides), Sentinel Rock, Cathedral Rocks, and Bridalveil Fall (one of the most prominent waterfalls in the Yosemite Valley). As we traveled through the park these iconic sights were often visible from different perspectives. The park is heavily forested so there was lots of greenery in addition to the rocky mountains and formations. Our main hike was from the visitor’s center area to Lower Yosemite Falls, mostly under towering trees.

Yosemite Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in North America with a 2,425 cumulative drop. We “hiked to the hike” from our parking spot so we’re not really sure how far we hiked altogether. From a distance Yosemite Upper and Lower Falls are visible but as you get closer you just see the powerful lower falls pounding into boulders scattered at it’s base. We were close enough to feel a cool mist in the air. Returning from the lower falls there was another short hike to a viewpoint that let us see both the lower and upper falls with a gurgling stream flowing by. A very peaceful spot where naturalist John Muir once had a cabin.

Next up we completed Cook’s Meadow Loop Trail which was a level paved loop around the meadow but it provided outstanding views of the west wall of the valley including Yosemite Falls and El Capitan, and Half Dome to the north.

A short offshoot trail took us to a bridge over the Merced River and gave us several more impressive views. Our last stop was on our drive out of the park along the Merced River which was a stunning view of Bridalveil Fall, as well as several other of the previously mentioned sights in Yosemite Valley. Also on the way out we visited the Tunnel View viewpoint again to see how the lighting had changed since early morning. Then it was time to head back to the RV, eat hamburgers for dinner, talk to M&D&A, plan for day two in Yosemite tomorrow, and rest.

May 13, 2021
Day two at Yosemite we devoted to the Glacier Point area. A long, winding road led us up through the trees to over 7,200 feet with two viewpoints – Washburn Point and Glacier Point. From Glacier Point we had an exhilarating view 3,214 feet down into the valley below which we visited yesterday. Between the two points we had commanding views of Yosemite Valley, Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Vernal and Nevada Falls, and Yosemite’s High Sierra country.

The panoramic views looked wonderful in the early morning sun, but probably would be even better later in the day. There was an interesting geology exhibit that told about the formation of the area. Our final stop of the morning was a viewpoint on the way out that gave an expansive view of a forested valley which, unfortunately, had experienced some fire damage. We saw areas of fire damage throughout the park, but also saw a lot of workers cleaning up some of the forested areas. The only hike today was the short 1/2 mile roundtrip hike to the Glacier Point Viewpoint. Other hikes in the area were too long, had too much of an elevation gain, or were hard to get to because the shuttle wasn’t operating in the park due to Covid. We were back in the RV about noon where we relaxed (getting real good at that), did stuff on our computers, made chili for dinner, and relaxed some more.

May 14, 2021
Our final leg to home began today. We didn’t leave until about 9:00 since we only plan on a 5 ½ hour drive today. We arrived about 2:30 at the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning, CA, which has a huge truck parking lot. After a brief rest we went to check out the casino. Masks were required there. Sadly, their wonderful buffet no longer exists due to Covid, with no plans to bring it back. The casino was full of people. The facility had a lot of construction going on in and out so business must be good. We returned to the RV, had chili leftovers for dinner, and Pat read while Laurie did Sudoku.

May 15, 2021
Today we were on our way by 6:30 am. Early morning it was cloudy and we had occasional sprinkles – the first rain of any sort since Nebraska. The drive took us through lush, forest covered mountains which was so different from our dusty, rocky mountain and formation studded drive a few days ago. Lake Shasta had the lowest water level we’ve seen in our travels with a huge ring of the formerly submerged land ringing the shore. Mount Shasta had it’s summit in the clouds with snow filled areas streaking down from it. Farther north in California we were back in sunshine with a few clouds around. Since we left so early this morning we got to Seven Feathers Casino way ahead of schedule. We decided to continue driving so we’d have a shorter day tomorrow. We even killed some time at two rest stops on the way so we wouldn’t get to our overnight site too early. One of the rest stops, French Prairie Rest Area, was huge with loads of pull-through spots and overnight parking up to 12 hours. We spent the night in the Camping World parking lot in Wilsonville, OR, where they allow overnight parking (once you check in and get a sign to put in your RV’s window so the police don’t kick you out in the middle of the night). We spent the evening packing up what we could so first thing in the morning we could load up the car.

May 16, 2021
With the car loaded up with everything but the food in the fridge/freezer, we drove off by 7:00 am. Traffic was pretty good and before we knew it we were at the storage unit by 11:00 am. After the RV was settled in it’s “garage” we headed home. How wonderful to see Daniel and Nicole’s smiling faces after almost 6 months! They looked great as did the house, inside and out. They were very good housekeepers while we were away. It will take a while to get totally unpacked and used to our non-traveling life again, but we are extremely happy to be home!

Overall, it was an amazing journey that started back in December of 2019 when we headed south with Nicole joining us for a while. Late January 2020 we met Bette-Karen and Bill to pick up Mom and Dad and bring them back to Yuma with us where they stayed in their own Airbnb a couple miles from our RV site. On the way home to Mukilteo we spent a week having fun in Las Vegas, us in our RV and M&D at Harrah’s. Covid was just getting started then and by the time we reached home in early March it had started to spread, and concern was rapidly rising. M&D were supposed to stay 2 weeks then fly to Skokie but it became unsafe to fly, especially for people their age. They pushed out their stay a month, then another month, and another . . . Come fall they really didn’t want to spend the winter in Illinois so we decided they’d spend the winter with us in Yuma in their own place. We left Mukilteo in the RV early in December 2020 spending four months in Yuma, which culminated with all four of us getting the Covid vaccine. Since it still wasn’t safe to fly we drove M&D back to Skokie in the RV (including a visit to the Petrified Forest National Park on the way) arriving in Skokie on April 12th. The next 2 ½ weeks were spent getting them settled back home as well as doing some major house-cleaning and “decluttering” of their house. Our mission accomplished we started the return two-week trek home driving south again to avoid any possible mountain snow. We did a combination of boondocking and staying in RV parks while we visited five national and one state park along the way. May 16, 2021, we happily returned home, ready to start planning our next adventure!

Skokie! Long time no see….

While we have not been to Skokie for over seven years (at Michelle & Nathan’s wedding), the impact is even greater for Mom/Dad. When they left Skokie in November 2019 little did they know that they would not be back for 17 months! Their original plan took them to Las Vegas for a week, then visiting with Bette-Karen & Bill in Tucson before we picked them up at the end of January 2020 to spend a month in Yuma before heading back to Mukilteo (with a short stopover in Las Vegas).  The plan was to spend a couple weeks in Mukilteo with us before flying back home to Skokie in March. However, that is when Covid hit, making it unsafe to fly.  They pushed their flights out a month, then another, and another… always hoping things would be better in another month. However, things did not get better and we decided to drive back to Yuma the following winter. Now, after four months and with all of us fully vaccinated, it is finally time to head to Skokie!

Our itinerary is as follows:

We will spend an extra day at our first stop near Flagstaff to visit The Petrified Forest National Park as well as the Painted Desert.

April 7, 2021
After last minute preparations and loading up Mom and Dad, we hit the road just after 7:00. Along our drive we encountered varied desert landscapes with mountains mostly as a backdrop (and driving through some for a little while).  There were some green irrigated fields but mostly it was rocky with different kinds of cacti including lots of saguaro. We stopped at the Sunset Point Rest Area in between Phoenix and Flagstaff to have a nosh consisting of broccoli quiche and poppyseed muffins about 11:15. There was a scenic viewpoint overlooking a valley backed by mountains that was very pretty and allowed us to stretch our legs a little bit. Approaching Flagstaff we were at an elevation of about 6,000-7,000 feet and the temperature dropped to 72 degrees – wonderful after the 90+ degree days in Yuma! On the horizon we could see a snowcapped peak called Humphrey’s Peak at 12,637 feet. It’s the highest of a group of dormant volcanic peaks known as the San Francisco Peaks. We arrived at OK RV Park in Holbrook, AZ, right on schedule at 3:00. Laurie hooked up electric and water (since the water pump was having intermittent issues) and we settled in. Dinner was slow cooker BBQ beef, potato salad, and coleslaw. After dinner we walked over by the RV park office where they had a display of petrified logs that were beautiful to look at and gave us a taste of what was to come the next day. In the evening Dad had a speaker phone call about possible fraudulent use of one of his credit cards. Throughout the call we could hear a rooster crowing in the background! It turns out the customer service rep was in the Philippines where it was morning and he had at least one rooster helper. The last thing we heard before Dad hung up was one last loud rooster crow. It was quite comical! We then watched some CNN and turned in early after a long day.

April 8, 2021
We got an early start about 8:30ish and headed to the Petrified Forest National Park and Painted Desert about half an hour away. It was a gorgeous day with a few clouds around and the temperature got up to 75 degrees in the park, but it was very windy. Mom and Dad bought Laurie a Lifetime America the Beautiful National Park Pass for a birthday present which we made use of entering the park. They added a Park Passport later to keep track of the parks we visit as well as stamps for today’s parks. The park is basically a 28 mile drive which we did south to north, stopping at various points of interest. The first area was the Petrified Forest. We stopped at the visitor’s center to gather information, then briefly checked out the area behind the center which had a hike and an abundance of petrified wood which we briefly examined before heading on. Petrified wood is amazing to look at with it’s varied, often brilliant, colors making each piece unique. We got most our exercise for the day at our first stop, the Crystal Forest, which is a ¾ mile loop hike with many petrified logs glimmering with quartz crystals along the way. Mom and Dad were real troopers throughout the hike despite several inclines and strong winds.

Blue Mesa was another spectacular area with layered weathered outcrops in shades of white, gray, and bluish gray. Another stop was Newspaper Rock which was a short walk to an observation area with telescopes where we could look down on several huge rocks with 650 Puebloan petroglyphs, some as old as 2,000 years! The entire drive we saw amazing expansive views but the area that stood out was the Painted Desert at the north end of the park. The road in the area had many stops with unbelievable lookouts to observe vast areas of colorful, layered rock formations, with red being the predominant color. At the Kachina Point outlook we talked with a park volunteer (named Jerry Treanor) who gave us information about the park as well as told us about his life as a volunteer. He was very friendly and interesting, and suggested that we visit the Cowboy Dinner Tree when we visit Crater Lake in Oregon. This only scratches at the surface of what we experienced at the park today! Happy, tired, and out of adjectives to describe all that we saw, we returned to the RV to rest, chat, watch CNN, and have a repeat dinner of yesterday.

April 9, 2021
We were on the road by 7:00 on a pleasant, sunny, 70ish day. Our travels today took us east through 2 time changes, from Arizona through New Mexico and into northern Texas. Again there were many different, “multi-adjective” worthy landscapes to observe along our drive. With the two times changes we arrived at Oasis RV Resort in Amarillo at 6:00 after stopping to gas up at Love’s just up the street. It’s a very neat, clean park with almost all 75’ pull-thru’s. Mom’s spaghetti and garlic bread started a relaxing evening.

April 10, 2021
Happy Birthday Laurie! Once again we hit the road just after 7:00. The sun was just a glow on the horizon but it progressed into a bright, sunny morning. The Texas Panhandle that we drove through in the morning consisted of lots of flat fields as far as the eye could see. Some were planted. Some were not. Some had cattle, others had massive wind turbines. Some had a combination. Mid-morning we entered Oklahoma. The drive wasn’t very exiting – lots of trees in-between areas of civilization. The sky slowly filled with puffy clouds as the day went on and the temperature got up to 64 degrees. We arrived at the KOA Journey RV Park in Joplin, MO, about 3:00 and settled in for the rest of the day. It was a nice “rustic” park with gravel sites and roads, lots of trees just starting to green up, a large fishing pond (supposedly stocked with catfish and perch), and a smaller duck and turtle pond. Laurie got calls and emails from family members to wish him a Happy Birthday. Mom had made a meatloaf before the trip to which we added mashed potatoes and corn for a delicious dinner. After dinner we sat and chatted until bedtime about 9:00.

April 11, 2021
We kept up our streak and again managed to get started just after 7:00 on this sunny morning. Today’s drive was through Missouri and into Illinois ending up in the Springfield area. Missouri was very green with lots of cattle along the way, as well as numerous billboards advertising various attractions from caverns to a huge candy store. Passing the St. Louis Gateway Arch was very cool. When the sun hit it right it was shiny to the point of looking like it was lit up. Upon entering Illinois the landscape quickly turned into miles and miles of farms. Some already appeared to have plants growing.  We arrived at the Double J Campground in Chatham, IL (just before Springfield) at 2:45. This is another park that has a lot of trees and gravel sites and roads. There were some puddles around as rain had gone through prior to our arrival and the temperature was only 57 degrees. We relaxed and enjoyed the quiet and stillness of the non-moving RV until a dinner of leftovers – spaghetti, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, corn, and garlic bread.

April 12, 2021
A cold but sunny start to the day. Since we had a shorter drive today we didn’t leave until after 10:00. Our drive took us mainly past more farms putting us at Sycamore RV Resort about 1:45. With a little help from a park worker Laurie managed to back the RV into a tight spot in-between trees where we look east out over a small lake. We set up the RV, packed up all of Mom and Dad’s stuff (as well as Mom and Dad), and drove a little over an hour to arrive in Skokie. This was the first time they were home in over 16 months! Everything seems fine inside and out. The car even started after Dad hooked up the battery. Bette-Karen had done some work around the house including having a new toilet put in since the original one was leaking, and stocking up the fridge and freezer with a ton of homemade and store bought food. They spent some time getting settled in then we had a Lou Malnati’s pizza and salad delivered for dinner. About 7:00 we departed by taking side roads home – first including going by our first house in Hoffman Estates which we moved out of about 31 years old. It looked pretty much the same! After our return to the RV we both had odds and ends to do before turning in after another long day.

April 13, 2021
We left the RV about 9:30 for the 1 hour and 10 minute drive to Skokie. After a delicious brunch of bagels, lox, grapes, hard boiled eggs, and scones (courtesy of Bette-Karen) it was time to get to work trying to clean some stuff out of Mom and Dad’s house. Laurie and Dad worked on the rec room while Pat and Mom worked on the small bedroom. A lot of progress was made but there’s still a long way to go. Dinner was leftover pizza and salad along with shrimp and cocktail sauce. We called it a day just after 6:00 to get some rest to tackle the house emptying project some more tomorrow. On the drive back to the RV we dropped off 3 large bags of clothes at Goodwill so some stuff physically made its way out of the house. It was a fun, productive, tiring day.

April 14, 2021
After fortifying ourselves with another delicious brunch the cleaning continued. In the afternoon Bette-Karen came by so we took a break and spent the rest of the day visiting and catching up. We dined together on spaghetti (provided by Bette-Karen) and continued to visit after dinner. On our drive home we dropped off several more bags at Goodwill.

April 15, 2021
We ate breakfast on the RV this morning before making the drive to Skokie. Dad had a 10:00 eye doctor appointment in Costco and ordered new glasses while Mom and Pat shopped filling up a shopping cart. After a rest we kept up the cleaning progress finishing up the rec room, Bette-Karen’s room, and the boys’ room. It feels and looks good to have completed those areas. Costco provided dinner – a yummy street taco kit. Once again we dropped off more bags at Goodwill.

April 16, 2021
We left the RV about 6:00 am. Mom had an 8:00 dermatology appointment in Glenview, and both M&D had lab appointments. Mom has a small but painful skin lesion on the back of one hand which the doctor numbed and scraped off for a biopsy. Once the numbness wore off it was very painful for her but at least she’s on the road to knowing what it is and getting it taken care of. The cleaning continued with the Laurie and Dad tackling the foyer closet, and Pat and Mom the linen closet. More bags for Goodwill!

April 17-18, 2021
Beautiful sunrise looking out the front window at the lake view with geese and ducks gliding by. We accomplished more cleaning over the weekend making progress and now have more work behind us than remains. A guy Jerome recommended (Umberto) came by to give an estimate of carting away a lot of stuff from our cleaning endeavors. Mom served a yummy Greek chicken and potato dinner each night.

April 19, 2021
This morning we drove in to Skokie to pick up M&D to take them to doctor’s appointments in Glenview. All was well with both of them. Yeah! Afterwards we went to pay Mark a visit. He looked great and it was wonderful to chat with him – catching up and reminiscing. He has two cats named Lola and Jade who were very shy. After our visit we swung by Pequods’s Pizza in Morton Grove to pick up a frozen sausage pizza. (It ended up being just okay. Lou Malnati’s is better.) We took a leisurely drive back to the RV staying off the highways so we could see how our old stomping grounds had changed. We drove through Glenmoor, our old neighborhood in Algonquin to see the house where we lived in the 90’s. Things pretty much looked the same except the landscaping had grown. They never did build the road that was supposed to run past the back of our lot and it’s now a beautiful green space. Today was a “non-cleaning” day.

April 20, 2021
A very cold start to the day with the temperature near freezing. When we left the RV we could see tiny specs of snow in the air if we looked close. Arriving in Skokie we spent time visiting with M&D before we all headed to the First American Bank to take care of some business. This included updating their safety deposit box as well as having their will and health directive documents signed and witnessed. Back at the house we visited some more before deciding to get an estimate from 1-800-GotJunk to compare with Jerome’s guy. After finding out the high estimate price from Jerome compared with “Got Junk”, and some negotiating by Laurie, it was decided to go with Got Junk and they could do the job right away. About 3 hours later everything was cleared out of various rooms and it looked wonderful! Mom made a nice salmon dinner before we hit the road a little later than usual to head back to the RV. A very productive day!

April 21, 2021
Another cold start with the temperature in the mid to upper 30’s. We had another productive day at M&D’s finishing up the rec room and kitchen, still leaving some time for visiting and enjoying a delicious, hodge-podge dinner together. We got to meet M&D’s neighbor Amanda who was very nice. During the afternoon we actually had some off and on snow flurries! We got back to the RV a little bit earlier than usual and spent time finding an RV park near Bryce/Zion for our return road trip.

April 22, 2021
Not quite as cold this morning and it got warmer as the sun rose higher in the sky. We are getting closer to the end of our cleaning project as we finished up M&D’s utility room and upstairs bathroom. Laurie also put in a new front doorbell and checked out their router. Dinner tonight was Portillo’s hot dogs along with Caesar’s salad and fries. It had been a very long time since we had a Chicago hot dog and it was wonderful! Before settling into the RV for the night we went for a short walk along the lake. There wasn’t much to see with no signs of life in the water near the shore. The sun was slipping behind the trees and it started to cool off fast so we headed in. Just about the time we were thinking of turning in, Robin made contact and asked if we wanted to Skype. We couldn’t turn down a chance to see Robin and Sijia and, of course, Evie! It was great to see them and Evie was adorable as usual. We can’t wait to see them in less than a month, especially since we will all be fully vaccinated.

April 23, 2021
A beautiful reddish sunrise this morning. After catching up on some things and relaxing a bit, we once again headed to Skokie. We didn’t do too much work today but at least accomplished a little bit. Mom made some yummy chili served over pasta which really hit the spot. It’s been a long time since we had Mexican food. After chatting for a little while we headed out as we had a grocery order to pick up at Walmart in Niles. Returning to the RV we repeated our morning of tending to a few things and relaxing.

April 24, 2021
A repeat of yesterday without the grocery pick up.

April 25, 2021
Happy Birthday Dad! It was a fun day of celebrating with Dad, Mom, Bette-Karen, Bill, and Jerome. So great to see everyone after so many years. Of course the day included an abundance of food. After appetizers of cheese and crackers we moved onto the main meal: Jerome’s sushi tray, Mom’s salad, Bill’s grilled sausage and veggies, and Pat’s mostaccioli – all accompanied by red wine. We had two rich,  yummy desserts. Bette-Karen made a triple layered chocolate and pumpkin cheesecake covered in ganache, and Pat made a layered brownie/PB/Cool Whip/Reese’s dessert. There was a lot of good conversation along with the food.

April 26, 2021
The sunrise was very pretty again this morning: a colorful, cloud streaked sky over the wind-rippled, goose-dotted lake, and the greening up tree line on the far shore in between. We had another cleaning push at M&D’s with Dad and Laurie tackling the downstairs bathroom while Mom and Pat did Mom’s bedroom closet. The main area that remains in M&D’s bedroom/dresser but the closets appear done. There’s always fine-tuning that can be done. Laurie also replaced some closet light fixtures that had stopped working. We had leftovers from yesterday’s celebration which delicious once again.

April 27, 20021
A warm, partly sunny day with the temperature at 65 degrees by 9:00 am and mid 80’s by the afternoon. Today we stayed at the RV to get some things done and get organized for our return trip on Sunday. Some of Laurie’s chores included replacing the malfunctioning water pump as well as the outside faucet and sprayer. Pat cleaned the RV inside, did research/organizing for the trip, and caught up on some other odds and ends. We had the windows open today and got to hear a variety of birds tweeting as we did our work, with occasional geese honking. This was the first day since the end of January 2020 that we didn’t see Mom and Dad! It was bound to happen. Dinner was the other half of the Pequod’s Pizza we had in the freezer. In the evening we watched the movie “Blood Simple” which was an odd Coen Brothers movie which was okay.

April 28, 2021
Today was a laid back day. Laurie did a little work on M&D’s bedroom TV setup, but the rest of the afternoon we just hung out. M&D brought in some ribs from Portillo’s along with fries, onion rings, and Mom made a salad. A simple day.

April 29, 2021
Actual rain! We haven’t seen anything more than a few scattered drops since sometime during the early part of our stay in Yuma. It sounds nice on the RV roof, especially with the plunk of extra heavy raindrops that accumulate on the tree branches over the RV before descending onto the roof.  It was another day of fine-tuning some of our prior cleaning. Leftover ribs, salad, and Mom’s potatoes made a delicious dinner. On the way home we picked up a last pre-trip Walmart order which should get us home as far as food goes except maybe for bread, milk, and, of course, ice cream.

April 30, 2021
An early start today as Mom had a 9:40 dermatologist appointment in Glenview to finish up the treatment for the back of her hand. Back at M&D’s we mostly sat around and visited with a little more cleaning up. Pat brought some frozen beans she had made in Yuma and made Sephardic rice and a salad to go with it. Part of today’s cleaning was going through documents, etc. that Dad had for shredding. It was a lot, about 18 pounds worth, so we brought it to FedEx for shredding on the way home. M&D are still working on their bedroom but make some progress each day but otherwise our work there is done.

May 1, 2021
A beautiful start to a very windy day. We went by Grease Monkey to get an oil change on the car in Sycamore before starting our drive. Along the beginning of our drive we go through lots of farmland where the farmers were busy getting their fields ready for planting. Some of the fields already were green with some crop we couldn’t identify. Arriving in Skokie we awaited the arrival of Adam who was taking a Lyft ride from Midway Airport. Before he made his entrance Bette-Karen and Bill came in. Once we were all together we had a wonderful visit followed up with Lou Malnati’s pizza and salad for dinner. The conversation continued after dinner before we said our goodbyes to Bette-Karen and Bill who were leaving. After a little more time spent with Adam it was time to head out. It was so nice that we were able to at least spend a few hours with him. Then the really hard part came – saying goodbye to M&D after 15 months together. ☹ It was a fun, memorable adventure together that we’ll think of often. It came about the way it did because of Covid 19, so something good came out of the virus for us. We love you Mom and Dad and would do it all over in a heartbeat! But, on to the next part of our journey . . .

On the road again!

It’s been a long time since we’ve ventured anywhere outside the house, as we’ve been locked down due to Covid-19 (aka Coronavirus). We’ve been hunkered down with Mom/Dad since returning from Yuma nine months ago. We are all anxious to get out and start doing things again! This year we are aiming to get an early start. We will combine Thanksgiving with Hanukkah (“Thanksgivukkah”?) with Robin, Sijia and Evie, and start heading south the following week. Mom/Dad will be joining us on our travels, and will be staying in a Park Model at the same RV resort (“Sun Vista RV Resort”) just a short distance from our reserved RV spot. The current agenda is as follows:

We are aiming to meet up with Adam in Hemet (about 1-1/2 hour drive from San Diego), before heading on to Yuma where we plan to stay through the end of February. In March, we are currently planning to drive back to Chicago so Mom/Dad can vist their home which they have not been to since Nov 2019 due to the coronavirus. We understand that there are several pharmaceutical companies with a Covid-19 vaccine that they are expecting to bring to the market shortly. We hope the vaccine is effective, safe and available soon!

We’re off on another adventure with 2 unique differences from past trips. First, we are at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic so we will have to be extremely careful in all that we do, and there will be many things we won’t be able to do (due primarily to safety restrictions). Second, Mom and Dad are joining us on this trip to Yuma. If you read the blog from last winter’s trip you know they spent several weeks with us in Yuma, a week in Las Vegas, and then made the return trip home in the RV with us. The plan was a 2 week visit in Mukilteo – then a return trip to Skokie but then Covid-19 exploded in numbers making it unsafe for them to fly. As the virus progressively got worse Mom and Dad’s visit kept getting pushed out again and again until now. Since it’s still not safe to fly we all decided to venture to Yuma together to enjoy better weather and a change of scenery while riding out the winter and pandemic. We’ll reevaluate the situation and availability of a vaccine as the winter goes on. Our current reservations in Yuma are through the end of February, at which time we may stay longer awaiting a vaccine, we may drive M&D to Skokie in the RV, we may put them on a plane if things miraculously improve and they are vaccinated, or they could come back to Mukilteo with us. But, our goal is to get them vaacinated before leaving them in Skokie. We’ll see!

December 2, 2020 – Wednesday
After a sad goodbye to Daniel and Nicole we left the house about 7:00 am. We hooked up the tow car, settled into the RV, and left the storage facility just before 8:00 am. After a couple pockets of traffic on 405 we had smooth sailing for the balance of today’s trip. It was a very sunny day but as we drove south we encountered some on and off fog which was beautiful at times flowing around the trees and mountains. It had been a frosty morning and the melting frost on the bare trees sparkled in the sometimes intense sunshine. After traveling south of Portland we stopped at a rest area for a light lunch and coffee. An uneventful afternoon drive brought us to Seven Feathers RV Resort. With their Players Club Card the price for a stay was only $9.99! Unfortunately, our cards had expired which required Laurie to make a quick trip to the casino to renew them (very cautiously). Covid-19 precautions included having his temperature taken before he got on the shuttle, an infrared scan at the casino, another temperature taking on the return shuttle, and, of course, wearing a mask. It saved us about $50! We had a Costco “meal-in-a-bag” heated up in a frying pan with rosemary bread on the side, then relaxed for the evening watching TV before turning in early after a long day.

December 3, 2020 – Thursday
After a cozy night in the RV we were all up very early, fortified ourselves with coffee and biscochos, then departed just after 6:30. After getting gas at the Seven Feathers Truck Stop we were on our way a little after 7:00. We had another good traffic and weather day with just some spots of fog to contend with early. Late morning we stopped at a rest area for brunch then continued south, arriving at Flag City RV Park in Lodi, CA, and 68 degrees, about 3:15. We had a pleasant walk around the perimeter of the park before settling in for the evening. It’s a very clean park with a lot of fifth wheels in the back-in sites that mostly appeared to be residents. There were plenty of pull throughs for overnighters like us. We ate leftovers from yesterday along with a salad. Our evening was a combination of TV and conversation

December 4, 2020 – Friday
Another early start hitting the road just before 7:00 after coffee and biscochos. Our streak of sunny weather continues. The start of today’s travels was uneventful. A rest area provided us with stopping place for a quick lunch. As we journeyed farther south we encountered more and more of California’s infamous traffic. Being a Friday it appears traffic starts getting heavy before 2:00. Our 3:30ish arrival time turned into a 5:00ish arrival time (after dark!) at Golden Village Palms in Hemet. A 10 hour day on the road! Then came the fun of getting settled into our spot – in the dark. We had a pull through reserved so we didn’t have to disconnect the tow car. Their map showed us in the 4th spot from the end, right next to the pickleball courts. Instead of counting the spots as we went we aimed for the spot next to the courts which  turned out to be 5th spot which was not on the map and it wasn’t a pull through! Since we can’t back up with a connected tow car we had to disconnect, back out, and pull into the proper spot. Finally settled in, we enjoyed a pasta with leftover lasagna sauce and rosemary bread dinner, some TV, and an early turn in.

December 5, 2020 – Saturday
We’re staying here in Golden Village Palms to have a visit with Adam who is making the 1-1/2  hour drive up from San Diego to spend the day with us. Due to Covid-19 we will be outside the whole time, with masks on and socially distanced. Thankfully a chilly, but sunny, 43 degree morning quickly turned into a warm, sunny, 73 degree day. We had about 6-1/2 hours of good conversation and a sandwich lunch. It was so wonderful to see Adam again, and he was looking healthy, handsome, and in shape due to watching what he eats and taking up biking. The time went by fast and he was soon on his way again. After sitting all day, the four of decided to go for a walk to stretch our legs before getting cozy for the night. Due to a 2:00 lunch no one was hungry for dinner. When we made reservations it was with a 15% off Black Friday deal that included a gift bag which they dropped off shortly before it got dark and we closed up for the night. The bag included red wine, munchies, antibacterial wipes, and a couple of face masks. We spent the evening watching some TV and chatting.

December 6, 2020 – Sunday
We had an 8:00 departure for the last leg of our trip to Yuma. We had to reconnect the tow car and disconnect electric, water, and cable. This was the first time we hooked up water, plus we made it the whole trip south without hooking up the sewer hoses due to conserving water (no showers!). It made life a lot easier and our arrivals and departures much quicker. It was another sunny, California day as we made the 3 hour drive to Yuma, just over the border from CA, arriving at Sun Vista RV Resort shortly before noon. The park is on an “indoor” lockdown which means everything inside is closed for the time being due to the virus. The outdoor pool, shuffleboard, pickleball, mini golf, etc. remain open. We parked the RV in our spot (479) facing east with a distant mountain view and started setting up until Mom and Dad’s park model (553) keys were delivered. After checking it out we moved all their stuff from the RV to their new home for the next 3 months and left them to settle in while we did the same at the RV. Late afternoon we brought a frozen pizza and leftover pasta over for dinner. It was a long, tiring day so we chatted for a little bit then returned home to take long-awaited showers(!!) and turn in.

December 7- 13 , 2020
The past few days were spent settling in and establishing a routine. We spend our mornings and early afternoons doing our own thing, then join up with Mom and Dad late afternoon to visit and have dinner together. Sometimes we eat at the RV and sometimes at their cottage. Some of the items we’ve accomplished have been washing the RV, outdoor window shades, some RV screens, and the car. Laurie also waxed the RV, and Pat cleaned some blinds. We did a large Walmart pickup for our initial stock up, and next week we’ll finish stocking up with a trip to Costco. The daytime temperature tends to be around 70 with mixed sun and clouds. Very pleasant. One night it unexpectedly rained for a short time. Of course this was the night after we had just washed the RV! There are a few hummingbirds zipping around our RV like tiny rockets on a regular basis. So fast and cute when they hover in place or land on a tree branch momentarily. Nicole and Daniel surprised us by organizing Hanukkah candle lighting online. It was wonderful to celebrate together and to see the kids!

December 14-20, 2020
We’ve had a string of glorious sunny and warm days and we like to try to sit outside for a little while each afternoon. The warmth of the sun is very soothing and relaxing. Taking advantage of the weather we’ve visited out on our patio with M&D before grilling some yummy dinners. Nicole and Daniel’s nightly Hanukkah celebrations continued every night. On the last night they had Robin and Evie join which we all thoroughly enjoyed. We could just endlessly watch Evie – she’s so adorable and every single thing she does is entertaining. We went to Costco for a stock-up run which is in El Centro, CA (about 1 hour 10 minutes west and a different time zone)! It was a somewhat scenic drive, about ½ hour over the border into CA where there are huge rolling sand dunes. There were RV’s parked here and there across the expanse with their trailers carrying ATV’s to play in the sand. We did another Walmart run but it was much smaller than last week. In the evening when we part ways with M&D, we’ve started watching “The Walking Dead” series. After watching a couple episodes we go to bed – usually watching a little TV or read before falling asleep.

December 21-27, 2020
It’s been a typical week with mostly sunny, pleasant weather. We did have one cloudy, cool day as well as one short burst of rain early one evening. There were a couple of gorgeous sunrises with the mountains in the background that we viewed out the front window of our RV. We continue to alternate having dinners here or at M&D’s, including some delicious grilled meals here preceded by a happy hour on the patio soaking up the late afternoon sun and enjoying each other’s company and conversation. Finally everything came together to spend an afternoon playing shuffleboard together. There wasn’t anyone else on the courts but we had our masks handy. Laurie sanitized everything with alcohol sanitizer and wipes – cues, discs, the wax container, and even the marker for keeping score. We played “Guys” vs “Dolls” and had a lot of fun while getting in a little exercise. (The “Dolls” won both games!) On Christmas Eve Sun Vista had a parade of decorated golf carts and bicycles that drove around the park which was kind of cute. During the week there also were the usual items such as RV maintenance, cleaning, a Walmart pickup, watching The Walking Dead in the evening, etc.

December 28, 2020 – January 3, 2021
One of the hummingbirds zipping around has made itself a daily visitor to the lemon tree just outside our door. Throughout the day it comes and goes, landing on the leafless end of a branch or hovering in place. When the sun hits it later in the afternoon we can see it’s back is a very dark shade of green and it has shimmery reddish color on the front of it’s neck.

M&D got a surprise video phone call from Syd, Yvonne, and Ann in Sydney, Australia while we were at their cottage for dinner. Everyone looked great and they had a long, lively conversation. We hope to visit them in Spring 2022. It’s been sunny, a little bit cooler (low-mid 60’s), but often windy. This kept us off the shuffleboard courts as the tiny wax beads we shake on the courts blows off when it’s too windy and then the discs don’t slide. The RV tends to block the blowing wind on the patio/southside so we still can enjoy relaxing in the sun. New Year’s Eve was like any other day except we watched a movie, “3:10 to Yuma”, which we had seen a long time ago but was well worth seeing again. Of course we celebrated Mom’s birthday on the 1st. After the wind let up some in the afternoon we were able to get in a shuffleboard game. The “Guys” won this one. This was followed by happy hour in the sunshine on our patio, a shrimp scampi-pasta-asparagus dinner, and watching the movie “Jojo Rabbit” which was very good. We wrapped up the day by having a caramel pecan birthday cheesecake and presenting Mom with her annual calendars.

January 4-17, 2021
Yes, this entry covers 2 weeks! That should give you an idea of how routine our lives are here in Yuma. The important date during this time was Pat’s 63rd birthday. Laurie made breakfast sandwiches to start the day, and Mom made her wonderful chicken dish and also had a chocolate cake with candles to end the day. In between we enjoyed talking to all the kids and getting some Yuma sun. We did get in a couple days of shuffleboard but a lot of the afternoons have been a little too too windy to play. We have ridden our bikes around the park, gone for walks, picked up Walmart grocery orders, sat in the sun on the patio (where the RV blocks the wind), and continued to watch “The Walking Dead” in the evenings. The last few days were very sunny, the temperature reached into the 80’s, and we had some spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Our priority these days is to try to get M&D covid vaccines. Yuma has moved into the phase that covers adults over age 75 but the first week all the times were filled and now they are waiting for more vaccines, which is supposed to happen this week. Tuesday we will be calling at the given time to try to set up appointments. We’ll keep our fingers crossed and keep on trying!

January 18-24, 2021
The big event this week was getting Dad in to get his first Moderna vaccine shot through the Yuma County Public Health Service. Due to the massive number of people trying to get appointments coupled with the poor appointment system, we weren’t able to get Mom an appontment this time, so now we wait for more vaccines to arrive in Yuma so we can get mom’s scheduled. We check online multiple times a day for Yuma vaccine news. Then we’ll have to get appointments for the second shots but online it looks like they give priority to people requesting their second dose. The process for actually getting the vaccine shot, though, was very efficient: We waited in the car for about 10 minutes in a staging area as directed by the National Guard, since we arrived about 30 minutes early. They then moved us to the main parking area and gave us a pager. When the pager goes off, that is dad’s signal to go in the building for his shot. We waited about five minutes before the pager went off, then dad was in the building for about five minutes to get the vaccine. Afterwards, we waited in the car for 15 minutes as instructed to ensure there were no adverse reactions. Overall, it was a very smooth and efficient process. This was the first time M&D were out of the RV park since we arrived back on December 6th!0

This week also saw a bit of rain, wind, and cooler temperatures (high of 64 degrees!) but at least the worst of it seemed to be overnight and early morning. We did get in some shuffleboard, bike riding,  and some relaxing time in the sun on the patio. Our evenings continue to be shared with zombies as we moved onto Season 6 of “The Walking Dead”.

January 25-31, 2021
This week started out with something different – a stormy Monday! We had a torrential downpour for while with some hail mixed in, then off and on showers. It was very windy all day with some occasional big gusts. There was some sun mixed in and we even had a rainbow which was especially pretty with a waving palm tree in the foreground. The temperature has cooled a bit as well, but 60ish is still better than Mukilteo or Skokie!

We were able to get Mom in for her first Moderna vaccine through the Yuma Regional Medical Center! It took Laurie over 120 redials to get through and about 20 minutes on hold! The vaccine clinic was held at the Yuma Civic Center and again was very efficient with Mom getting her shot exactly at her 9:30 appointment time. In this case, the process was to wait in the car until the scheduled time. At that time, Laurie went in with Mom where they were checked in, provided the shot, then waited in a holding area for 15 minutes before being released. Again – very smooth and efficient! We now rest for 3 weeks or so before we try to line up the second shot appointments for both M&D which need to be within 4-6 weeks of the first ones.

February 1-7, 2021
The weather has warmed up again and we even hit 80 degrees! The days are mostly sunny with some clouds later in the day that provide some glorious sunsets. Weirdly, a very light, very brief shower occasionally passes through (mainly at night) despite the precipitation forecast being only 1-2% chance of rain. We played a couple games of shuffleboard one afternoon with the “Guys” and “Dolls” each winning one game.

February 8-14, 2021
It was back to the lower 70’s this week with more clouds and several very windy days. A couple bike rides and watching much of Trump’s second impeachment trial were the highlights of a slow week.

February 15-21, 2021
The week started out a little cooler (60-70’s) and windy, but ended warmer (in the 80s) and calmer. Same routine: bike rides, walks, alternating where we have dinner, relaxing in the sun, and pre-dinner visits with M&D on the patio. Our evenings are still shared with “The Walking Dead”.

February 22-28, 2021
A beautiful start to the week with weather in the 80s and sun. Laurie took a bike ride out of the RV park to explore the surrounding area. We’re starting to plan our trip home at the end of March beginning with the Yuma to Skokie leg to get M&D settled back in their place. Mid-week we had some extremely windy weather that started overnight and lasted until late the next afternoon. It even rocked the RV a bit. The temperature dropped to the upper 60’s but it was a sunny, cloudless sky. On Thursday we took Dad to get his second Moderna dose through the Yuma County Public Health Department which went smoothly. By Friday we were back in the mid-70’s which made for a nice bike ride to the residential neighborhood south of the RV park.

March 1-7, 2021
A great start to the week with Mom getting her second Moderna shot through Yuma Regional Medical Center. It’s a relief to have both Mom and Dad fully vaccinated! Yuma has dropped the vaccination age to 55+ so we will see if we can get an appointment in the next week or so, otherwise it will have to wait a while. We made another trip to Costco in El Centro to stock up on a few things. It was a nice, sunny day with a variety of scenery along the way ranging from vast sand dunes to scruffy desert to expansive green fields of produce – so the hour or so drive went by quickly. We took a bike ride next door to The Palms RV Resort to look around. It’s a newer, more upscale park with casitas, villas, and fancier RV’s rather than the older park models in Sun Vista. Their amenities are pretty similar to Sun Vista but it just looks nicer. Of course it’s a lot more expensive to stay there, though! We’ve had several 80+ days in a row and even turned on the front AC in the RV one afternoon which worked well.

March 8-21, 2021
Another two-week entry (that should tell you how routine it’s been). The one major event was the two of us getting our first dose of the Pfizer covid vaccine on March 15th. We had slight injection-site soreness and Pat felt tired for a couple days (more so than usual!) We are staying until April 7th to accommodate getting our second doses on April 5th and 6th before we head to Skokie. About the only other happenings were some more windy weather, several very hot days, and Laurie giving Dad a haircut. We’ve been planning for Passover which starts at sundown on the 27th when the 4 of us here will do a Zoom seder with home. Also, we continue to plan our return journey. The general timeline is figured out but we need to finalize where we’ll spend our stops between Illinois and Mukilteo.

March 22-April 6, 2021
Week one – not much was going on. We did have a little outing with M&D to UPS and FedEx to drop packages off. We spent some time getting organized for Passover. The four of us here in Yuma had a wonderful Zoom Seder with Daniel and Nicole at home, and Robin, Sijia, and Evie at their place. Laurie led a nice service and we had a few minutes afterwards to visit. It was so good to see all the smiling faces of our family! Week two we continued to observe Passover, not eating grains and eating matzah. We also had a streak of very hot days, 90+ degrees. Some days there was a good breeze so it didn’t seem so bad. Other days we turned on the air conditioning in the afternoon.

G&G moved into another park model on April 1st for our last week here. (We extended our stay by a week due to us getting our 2nd Pfizer vaccines on the 4th and 5th.) The park director, Cody, will be staying at their old place as part of his employment package and apparently they wanted to get it ready for him to move into so G&G had to move out. However, it appears that one of their neighbors spoke with G&G while they were moving in, and he knows the RV park owner and told them about G&G having to move for their last week. The park owners stopped by and apologized to them and told them they should not have had to move. Since G&G had already moved everything and unpacked they decided to stay (the main downside is no washer and dryer). The owners said they would “make it right” and sure enough the next day Cody stopped by with a check to reimburse them for the rent they had paid for the extra week plus an extra $100.00! He was apologetic and G&G were vry pleased with the outcome.

Pat got her second Pfizer vaccine on the 5th and Laurie got his on the 6th. We had slightly sore arms but no other side effects. Our last couple of days here were spent getting ready to hit the road on the 7th. Pat did some cleaning, meal preparation, and laundry. Laurie did some cleaning/organizing, got the water softener ready for storage, washed the outside window coverings, cleaned up the grill and table, drained the tanks, filled up the water tank, packed up bikes and patio chairs, and a million other items.

Now – on to Skokie!
